Greater New York Black Lives Matter president Hawk Newsome joined "The Story" to discuss the direction of the movement in the wake of George Floyd's death in police custody and the subsequent demonstrations across the country, many of which have sparked destruction and violence. "Wow, it's interesting that you would pose that question like that," Newsome responded, "because this country is built upon violence. So for any American to accuse us of being violent is extremely hypocritical."

The Baltimore County Police Department released the body-worn camera video from the May 16 officer-involved #shooting of an armed 29-year-old man in the unit block of Skipjack Court. The suspect is identified as Robert Johnson Jr (29) of the unit block of Championship Court, 21117. Police Officer First Class Knight, a 24-year veteran of the force, responded to a call for a nuisance at 10:42 p.m involving a crowd of people in the parking lot in the unit block of Skipjack Court, 21221. When Knight arrived, he saw a green Buick being driven erratically by Robert Johnson Jr. The Buick had struck several parked cars in the area. Gun sales in Illinois are skyrocketing in the midst of several major events including the coronavirus pandemic, protests, the killing of George Floyd and the presidential election, according to one report. Within the first two weeks of June, more than 42,000 people in Illinois applied for a gun permit, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing data from the Illinois State Police. On just one day in June, applications reached almost 5,000. According to the newspaper, only about 7,000 people applied for gun permits during the same time last year. Meanwhile, over the course of December, January and February, there were a total of 48,194 gun permit applications. According to the Tribune, some of the people applying for permits are first-time gun owners who may have supported gun control in the past, but who are now buying guns to protect themselves.

A white Sacramento woman was punched in the face after she twice called a black woman the n-word during a fight in a convenience store. In the shocking footage, which was posted on social media, the unidentified middle-aged white woman is heard making the racial slur at the younger black woman during a shouting match in a California 7-Eleven. The black woman then dares her to use the racist term again, which she then does, causing a physical fight to break out.

The US #coronavirus death toll has edged toward the 125,000 mark and cases have risen by nearly 40,000 in the largest single-day increase seen since the pandemic began. A staggering 124,410 Americans have been killed by the virus as of midnight Thursday, up from a death toll of 121,979 recorded just 24 hours earlier. Infections rose across the US by at least 39,818 on Thursday, marking the worst day since the virus first hit the U.S. The new daily record inched past the previous record of 36,426 cases back on April 24 - which was then believed to be the peak of the pandemic - and topped the tally of 36,000 recorded Wednesday by almost 4,000. With fears mounting that the nation is headed for a second wave of the deadly outbreak, governors of several states announced they were putting the brakes on their reopening plans.
