The coronavirus death toll in the US is now at 14 after two more people were reported dead in Washington state as the number of confirmed cases across the country jumped to more than 200. Of the 14 deaths, 13 have been reported in Washington state and one in California. Many of the cases in Washington, including at least six deaths, have been linked to an outbreak at a nursing home facility in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland. Thirteen of the Washington deaths have occurred in King County, which is where the nursing home is. One person died in nearby Snohomish County. The California death was linked to a cruise ship that was still being held 400 miles off the coast on San Francisco on Friday amid fears of a suspected coronavirus outbreak.
Men are 65 per cent more likely than women to die from #coronavirus, according to statistics.Figures from the World Health Organization and Chinese scientists have revealed that 1.7 per cent of women who catch the virus will die compared to 2.8 per cent of men, even though neither sex is more likely to catch it. More than 98,000 people around the world have now been diagnosed with the virus, which causes a disease called COVID-19, and at least 3,383 have died. Some experts have put the higher risk among men down to higher smoking and drinking rates β both habits weaken the immune system, making people more likely to get ill. Death rates among people with diabetes β of which there are four million in the UK and 34m in the US β are expected to be around 7.3 per cent, while six per cent of patients who have high blood pressure might die if infected.

The global death toll from #coronavirus could reach as high as 15million even in the best-case pandemic scenario, a new study says. The research by the Australian National University also found that global GDP could shrink by as much as $2.3trillion even in what they call a 'low-end' pandemic. In the most disastrous scenario, the death toll could reach a staggering 68million including hundreds of thousands of deaths in Britain and the United States. In that worst-case pandemic, some countries' economies would shrink by as much as eight per cent in a global meltdown. The two researchers who published the paper, Warwick McKibbon and Roshen Fernando, warn that 'even a contained outbreak could significantly impact the global economy in the short run'. In the so-called 'low-severity' case, the death rate in China is estimated at around two per cent and adjusted for other countries.
