A Louisiana man pleaded guilty in federal court Monday to intentionally setting three historically black churches on fire early last year. Holden Matthews, 22, said he burned the churches to raise his profile as a “black metal” musician, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. The genre became inextricably linked to the crime after a series of high-profile church burnings were committed in Norway in the early 1990s. Matthews is charged with three counts of violating the Church Arson Prevention Act — one count for each church — as well as one count of using fire to commit a federal felony. His sentencing is scheduled for May 22, 2020. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a statutory maximum sentence of 70 years in prison if convicted.

(WARNING: 21+) Quinones, 30, was shot to death on September 7 after a suburban police pursuit that wound up in Richfield. Quinones, had live-streamed the minutes before his fatal confrontation with cops, and was listening to a rap album he'd released to Soundcloud only hours earlier. Quinones, a native of Puerto Rico and a father of one, had not open about any struggle with depression or mental health issues, according to a Star Tribune story about his death. Freeman said video evidence confirms Quinones was holding a knife and "threatened several officers" with it before they fired on him in defense. Police officers from Richfield and Edina were both at the scene and fired on Quinones, who was declared dead at the scene. #shooting
The father of a former student at Sarah Lawrence College in New York was arrested Tuesday after he was accused of running a sex cult out of his daughter's dorm room, FOX NEWS reported. Lawrence Ray, 60, an ex-convict whose best man at his wedding was former New York Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, was charged with nine counts of sex trafficking, extortion, forced labor and money laundering, authorities said. He was arrested at his home in Piscataway, New Jersey. He would face life behind bars if convicted. Investigators said at a morning news conference that Ray drained $1 million from the bank accounts of college kids, while subjecting them to psychological torture. The cult included forced labor, prostitution, and mentally and physically abusing his male and female victims, prosecutors said.
An Apple engineer who died when his Tesla Model X hit a concrete barrier on a Silicon Valley freeway had complained before his death that the SUV’s Autopilot system would malfunction in the area where the crash happened, according to FOX NEWS. The complaints were detailed in a trove of documents released Tuesday by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the March 2018 crash that killed engineer Walter Huang. The documents say Huang told his wife that Autopilot had previously veered his SUV toward the same barrier on U.S. 101 near Mountain View, Calif. where he later crashed. Huang died at a hospital from his injuries. Huang also described Autopilot's malfunctioning to his brother, the attorney wrote, in addition to talking with a friend who owns a Model X. Huang, a software engineer, discussed with the friend how a patch to the Autopilot software affected its performance and made the Model X veer, the lawyer’s response said.
