Man attacked near Oakland homeless encampment. Twenty-one year-old Max Zimmer showed us some bruises on his back, and the smashed windows of his pick-up truck, the visible damages of what he says was an attack near a homeless encampment in Oakland. He said he was driving home to Alameda from his construction job Tuesday afternoon when he got off at the High Street exit in Oakland. But he took too tight a turn on Alameda Avenue not far from the Home Depot, and skidded onto a curb. Zimmer said when he got out to check on his truck he was confronted by people who had come over from the homeless encampment across the street. He said one of the men told him he had run over one of their agave plants they were selling and wanted $300. He said he gave them the few dollars he had on him. Then he found himself surrounded by at least 10 people, some with sticks and two-by-fours. "I started getting beat. I was in the fetal position for 30-45 seconds," Zimmer said. He ran back to his truck. "They started busting out the window two by fours. Zimmer said she saw police arrest at least one man.

The deadly new coronavirus spreading across Asia is far more contagious than previously feared and can be spread third-hand via a simple cough or sneeze, medics have today confirmed. Eighteen people with the virus are now confirmed to have died and more than 600 have been infected in at least 10 countries. But experts predict the true number of people with the disease could be as many as 10,000 as they warn it may kill as many as two in 100 cases. Nine towns and cities in China are now in lockdown while officials battle to stop the spread of the deadly new coronavirus. Major Chinese New Year events in Beijing have been cancelled, authorities in Ezhou have shut down train stations, and Huanggang has announced it will suspend public buses and trains. The development comes as Wuhan – the city at the centre of the outbreak – remains in lockdown, with all flights in and outbound cancelled, residents banned from leaving and scenes of chaos as desperate families fight for food supplies. ☣️
Someone sent us a photo of this C8 Corvette with its wheels and tires stolen. The car was parked on the street in Detroit, Michigan, in a neighborhood called the West Village. We assume this is a GM-owned car, as the C8 isn't on sale yet at Chevy dealerships. Looking for a set of Corvette C8 wheels and tires at a steep discount? Check Craigslist in Detroit, because we can verify that there's a set missing from this black 2020 Chevy Corvette C8 that someone spotted on the street in the West Village. The poor mid-engined Corvette is now sitting on cinderblocks with its rear end resting on the ground, so it's likely that the criminals inflicted some damage in the process of swiping the wheels.

The Phoenix Police Department has released new details surrounding a November 2019 police standoff at a south Phoenix home that left four injured and one dead. In a 20-minute police video briefing made public Tuesday, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune provides commentary on the audiovisual footage collected at the scene. An anonymous 911 caller can be heard describing to a dispatcher the situation that initially alerted officers to the residence. “He hit his mom in the face and he has a gun in the house,” the caller said. “I think he witnessed a guy getting shot … about a month ago, and ever since that happened, he’s been somebody else. This is not him.” The person discussed in the call was later identified as 32-year-old Michael Austin.🔫👮🏻♂️ #shooting

The Phoenix Police Department has released new details surrounding a November 2019 police standoff at a south Phoenix home that left four injured and one dead. In a 20-minute police video briefing made public Tuesday, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune provides commentary…
Body camera footage shows Phoenix officers arriving at the residence and attempting to make contact with those inside. The officers identified themselves as members of the Phoenix Police Department before a voice can be heard saying, “I’m okay.” Officers left, according Fortune.
Later that night, someone called 911 and asked for police to again come to the house. The caller said Austin was in the house with other family members, and had a gun.
“I was able to call and talk to him on the phone, but apparently something physical went down and the phone went dead,” the caller said, adding that an additional party had aided in trying to “handle this peacefully.”
The standoff between police and Austin goes on for about five hours, according to a timeline Phoenix police released prior to the video.
Video footage shows officers entering the outside perimeter of the residence before being met by a series of gunshots.
Officers responded by firing several rounds of pepper balls into the house, according to police radio transmissions presented in the video briefing. A police negotiator from the Phoenix Police Department Special Assignments Unit can also be heard trying to communicate with Austin in radio transmissions from the scene.
“Michael ... what you have to say is very important to me,” the negotiator said. “We don’t want a confrontation with you. We’d like to help you resolve this.”
At one point, according to the video, police hear gunfire from within the house and are unable to confirm that the other individuals are safe, so decide to enter the house.
The released video does not include any police body camera video of the minutes before, during or after police enter the house and shoot and kill Austin. Fortune, in the video, describes what police say happened while using a 3D image of the inside of the house and some audio recordings of police entering the house.
The video briefing informs viewers that Austin had fired 25 rounds and was armed with two weapons, with additional firearms scattered throughout the house.
Police said Austin was shot in the exchange of gunfire with police. One officer and two women in the house were hit by fragments from projectiles fired by the officers and were injured.
Another officer was injured after being bitten by a K-9 unit dog.

Health officials in Brazos County, Texas, on Thursday said they are investigating a suspected case of the deadly new coronavirus in a person who recently traveled to Wuhan, the Chinese city where the virus originated. The patient, who was not named, has been isolated in their home after health care providers recognized their symptoms as consistent with the coronavirus - which has killed 18 people and sickened more than 600 across at least nine countries. So far only one case of the virus has been confirmed in the US - a Washington state man who was diagnosed on Monday after returning from a trip to Wuhan. Officials are also investigating another potential case involving a passenger who flew into Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico City on Wednesday. The two new suspected infections came as health experts warned that the US will likely see an increase in cases as the coronavirus continues to spread at an alarming rate. ☣️
UN officials were BANNED from using WhatsApp over security concerns because 'it's not supported as a secure mechanism,' a U.N. spokesman said on Thursday, Reuters reported. It comes after U.N. experts accused Saudi Arabia of using the messaging platform to hack the phone of Amazon CEO and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos. The independent U.N. experts said on Wednesday they had information pointing to the 'possible involvement' of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the alleged 2018 cyberattack on the billionaire Amazon chief. They called for an immediate investigation by U.S. and other authorities, based on a forensic report by Washington-based FTI Consulting. The report alleges that Bezos' iPhone was hijacked by a malicious video file sent from a WhatsApp account used by the crown prince.
