The United Nations has approved a Russian-backed cybercrime treaty that has alarmed America and Western powers who fear it will censor the internet. The General Assembly approved the resolution, sponsored by Russia and backed by China. The movement will now set up a committee of international experts in 2020. The panel will work to set up 'a comprehensive international convention on countering the use of information and communications technologies for criminal purposes,' according to the resolution. America, Western powers and other rights groups have already warned against the move as they fear that the language is code for legitimising crackdowns on expression.

Violence broke out on the streets of Paris today when French 'yellow vest' protesters gathered on the 24th day of the nationwide multi-sector strike. Protesters marching against the French government's planned pension reform clashed with the police in Paris on Saturday as police fired tear gas to disperse some groups of demonstrators. French trade unions have spearheaded nationwide strikes since early December in an outcry over President Emmanuel Macron's pensions overhaul, disrupting schools, railways and roads, while lending support to regular protests. Police used tear gas against protesters close to tourists hotspots like the Centre Pompidou museum of modern art, where some demonstrators had tried to erect barricades and set fire to them, and smashed up a bus stop. ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท

A robbery gang in Brooklyn forced a man into a car and fired a gun at his friend and all they got out of it was an iPhone. The suspects jumped one of the victims near Herkimer St. and Nostrand Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant about 3 a.m. They grabbed a 28-year-old man and dragged him into a nearby Honda Odyssey, surveillance video shows. While the hoods pushed the 28-year-old into the Honda, a hooded gunman shot across the street at the victimโ€™s 26-year-old friend. The 26-year-old was not hit. The shooter ran off, and his accomplices drove off in the Honda. Some distance away, the gang transferred the 28-year-old from the Honda Odyssey into a black Honda Accord. They then drove on about 20 minutes to East Flatbush and dumped him on Preston Court near Kings Highway. The man, found duct taped and zip-tied, was taken to a nearby hospital. Police said he suffered a wound to his forehead from being pistol whipped. Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call #NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Ramapo Police Chief Brad Weidel said the suspected attacker, identified as Grafton Thomas, 37, of Greenwood Lake, entered the residence around 10 p.m. armed with a knife. Saturday was the seventh night of Hanukkah and was being widely observed in Monsey, a hamlet that is home to thousands of Orthodox Jews. There were as many as 70 people in the rabbi's home at the time of the attack. Thomas then allegedly fled the scene in a silver sedan, according to witnesses. By midnight, Thomas was located in Harlem and taken into custody by the #NYPD. A senior law enforcement official told NBC 4 New York he was caught in his vehicle. License plate readers on the George Washington Bridge and in Harlem helped police zero in on the car's location, according to the official.
Thousands evacuated from Australian tourist haven as bushfires rage a swathe of Victoria as soaring temperatures and strong winds fan massive bushfires in the Australian state. With the mercury set to top 104 degrees in Melbourne, authorities urged an estimated 30,000 tourists to leave East Gippsland, an area half the size of Belgium. The fire danger is forecast to be extreme in seven of the stateโ€™s nine districts and threatened to close the Princes Highway, a major road artery in the region. The warm front is heading rapidly into New South Wales, with temperatures expected to spike on New Yearโ€™s Eve as hundreds of thousands gather around the harbor city of Sydney to watch its famous firework celebrations. Almost 900 homes have been ruined and 8.6 million acres of land burnt in NSW this bushfire season, while Sydney has been smothered by smoke for weeks on end. ๐Ÿ”ฅ
