At least 26 people are dead and 16 missing after the powerful Typhoon Hagibis ripped through Japan triggering deadly landslides and flooding rivers, with hundreds of homes evacuated. The destruction forced Rugby World Cup organisers to cancel the third matchโ€ฆ
Rescue workers waded through muddy, waist-high waters today searching for missing people after one of the worst typhoons to hit Japan in recent history, as officials warned of more rain later in the day. Digging through mudslides and searching near swollen rivers, the rescuers looked for those missing after as many as 48 people were killed and hundreds were injured in central and northern Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said vast areas had been struck by the storm and called for urgent support to the affected by the devastating typhoon Hagibis. At least 40 people were killed in the typhoon that left vast sections of towns in central and eastern Japan under water, with another 16 missing and 189 injured, public broadcaster NHK said. Tens of thousands of rescue workers and a fleet of helicopters have fanned out in the affected areas, officials said. ๐ŸŒช๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Six people were shot, the youngest a 14-year-old boy, when a gunman opened fire in Philadelphia - the sixth shooting to take place in one weekend. The latest, a drive-by shooting, happened on Sunday at 5:24 pm local time. Police received a 911 call with reports of gunshots and several victims at 8th Street and Clearfield Street. Acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner Christine Coulter said, at a local media briefing, the shooting was likely a drive-by. She said police had been scouring the area for evidence and found minimal shell casings on the street, leading her to believe the shooter fired from a car. The six victims all survived and were being treated at the Temple University Hospital for a range of injuries.

Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno has ordered the army on to the streets of the capital after a week-and-a-half of mass protests over a scrapped state fuel subsidy descended into violence. Masked protesters attacked a television station, newspaper and the nationalโ€ฆ
Ecuador's president and indigenous leaders reached an agreement yesterday to end nearly two weeks of violent protests against austerity measures adopted to obtain a multi-billion-dollar loan from the IMF. The demonstrations have left seven people dead and were sparked when President Lenin Moreno scrapped fuel subsidies to obtain a $4.2 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, causing prices to double. Moreno met with Jaime Vargas, the head of the indigenous umbrella grouping CONAIE, for four hours of talks in the capital Quito which were broadcast live on state television. 'With this agreement, the mobilisations... across Ecuador are terminated and we commit ourselves to restoring peace in the country,' said a joint statement, adding the government had withdrawn an order that removed fuel subsidies.
