NEW: Remains found in New Mexico national forest ID’d as those of Melissa Casias, who vanished last year.

The discovery in the McGaffey Ridge area of Carson National Forest was reported Thursday, and the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office identified the remains as those of Melissa Casias, authorities said.
“Investigators also learned that a handgun was located alongside the remains,” New Mexico State Police said in a statement Saturday.
The Medical Investigator’s Office is likely to determine the cause and manner of death, police said.
A representative for Casias’ family said it would have no comment until after an upcoming meeting with investigators.
Representatives for Los Alamos National Laboratory didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.
The area of the discovery, about 6 miles from Casias’ home, can be reached by a state highway, which she was seen walking along the day she was reported missing.
Casias, 53, was reported missing on June 26, when her supervisor phoned her husband looking for her because she hadn’t reported for work, her husband, Mark Casias, said in an interview last year.

JUST IN - The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that Warren Secretary Hegseth’s policy banning transgender people from military service was driven by unconstitutional animus.

In a 2–1 decision, the court also blocked the military from removing certain currently serving transgender service members.

A major Southern California Carl’s Jr. franchisee is planning to close 10 restaurant locations and sell 49 others after filing for bankruptcy earlier this year, according to 209 Times.

The franchise operator, which owns 59 Carl’s Jr. restaurants across California, cited rising labor costs, including California’s $20 fast food minimum wage, along with what it described as a lack of corporate support and innovation as factors behind its financial struggles.

Despite generating more than $6 million in monthly revenue, bankruptcy filings show the restaurants were losing over $600,000 per month in 2025. The locations are now being marketed for sale, with potential buyers already expressing interest.

Carl’s Jr. says the bankruptcy is specific to this franchisee’s operations and does not impact other locations.
