When U.S. Border Patrol agents started dumping migrants at a San Antonio bus station in late March, sometimes in the middle of the night with no warning, Colleen Bridger didn't know what to do. The assistant city manager wanted to speak with the Border Patrol to figure out what was going on, how to coordinate the drop-off times and how to assess the volume of migrants San Antonio could expect in the future. But because the Texas city is 150 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border and had never dealt with an influx of undocumented immigrants before, there was a problem. "I didn't even know the right department or division or office to call," Bridger said... (further on the link)

Boris Johnson can't resist witty dig at Brexit opponents in United Nations General Assembly speech ๐๐๐ฌ๐ง๐ฌ๐ง
Published: 11:22, 25 Sep 2019
Boris Johnson joked on Tuesday that if some members of parliament had their way Brexit would be an endless process like the torment of the Greek mythological figure Prometheus.
Addressing the annual gathering of world leaders for the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister spoke little about the UK attempts to leave the EU. But in his one mention of the divisive issue, Mr Johnson referred to how the Titan's liver was pecked out by an eagle

It is dangerous being a police officer, and in more ways than one. This is a fact that France is painfully waking up to at the moment, with the country facing a very disconcerting rise in police suicides. 64 French gendarmes have taken their own lives so far in 2019. Whatโs particularly alarming about this figure is that it surpasses the number of officers who have died in the line of duty. Not only that, but the current suicide rate among the gendarmerie is 36% higher than that of the general population. Denis Jacob, the head of the Alternative Police CFDT union, predicts that this difference is likely to become more pronounced in the coming months: โgiven the situation today, 2019 could be the worst [for officer suicides] in the last 30 years.โ (further on the link)
Donald Trump began his first day as a formal impeachment target the same way he has approached the months of informal impeachment rumblings since Democrats took over the House of Representatives. He went on offense. 'There has been no President in the history of our Country who has been treated so badly as I have,' he tweeted Wednesday morning. 'The Democrats are frozen with hatred and fear. They get nothing done. This should never be allowed to happen to another President. Witch Hunt!'

Alex Whipple, 22, sexually assaulted and murdered Elizabeth 'Lizzy' Shelley, 5, in May before hiding her body in the woods. Her disappearance triggered a massive five-day search in the picturesque mountain valley of Logan, Utah. At his sentencing, Judge Kevin K. Allen berated Whipple for the 'incomprehensible' terror he inflicted on Lizzy, her family and the community. During the emotional hearing, Whipple was called a 'monster' by relatives, and kept silent as he hung his head. Judge Allen said: 'You will never see the light of day. You will never breathe fresh air again,' Allen said. 'What you did was so abhorrent and vile that you must spend the rest of your life in prison.'

Placido Domingo has agreed to withdraw from his scheduled performances at New York's Metropolitan Opera House in the wake of sexual harassment allegations made by multiple woman. The 78-year-old opera legend, who has starred in more opening night performances at the institution than anyone else, indicated in a statement on Tuesday that he may never return to the performance space. Domingo was scheduled to sing the title role in the season debut of Verdi's 'Macbeth' on Wednesday night. It would have been his first performance in the United States since reports that numerous women had accused him of inappropriate behavior, including one soprano who claimed he grabbed her bare breast. #facepalm
