It is with profound sadness that the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, NY, announces that K9 Mikey was put to rest on Friday, February 13, following a sudden and unexpected aggressive illness. The loss comes during an especially difficult week for our agency, as we mourn the passing of two of our K9 partners in just two days.

K9 Mikey, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois from Holland, was a New York State–certified Patrol and Explosive Detection K9. For four years, Mikey faithfully served the residents of Putnam County alongside his handler, Deputy Christopher Tompkins, forming an unbreakable bond both on and off duty.

Mikey was named in honor of Brewster Firefighter and former Putnam County Deputy Michael Neuner β€” a tribute reflecting the courage, dedication, and spirit he carried throughout his career.

Throughout his service, Mikey demonstrated unwavering drive, discipline, and heart. He played a critical role in numerous investigations and in the apprehension of criminal offenders. Above all, he was a loyal partner β€” steadfast, protective, and always ready to work.

K9 Mikey’s watch is complete. His legacy will live on in the safety he helped provide and in the bond he shared with his handler and this community.

Rest easy, Mikey. You will never be forgotten.

End of Watch: February 13, 2026"

NEW: Cain Velasquez, the former two-time UFC heavyweight champion, was released from a California state prison on parole on Sunday, February 15, 2026, after serving about 10–11 months behind bars.
The release comes before the full five-year sentence he originally received, due to credit for time already served (including prior jail time and house arrest) and parole eligibility.

Last week, an alert and caring resident called to report a bucket containing six puppies left on the side of the road near Old Highway 395 and S/R 76.

The caller stayed with the puppies to keep them safe until deputies arrived. The puppies were then transported to the Fallbrook Substation and transferred to the Department of Animal Services, where they will be well cared for.

This is another reminder that no two calls are ever the same, and that looking out for one another, especially the most vulnerable, can make a difference.

A huge thank you to the citizen who made the call and stayed with the puppies. They were left on a very busy roadway, and the situation could have been extremely dangerous. Your quick action helped save six little lives.
