Texas DPS Arrests Human Smuggler after High-Speed Pursuit in Webb County

10/14/25: A smuggler driving a white Ford pickup led TxDPS Troopers on a high-speed chase in Webb Co.

During the pursuit, the driver — Damian Cantu of Laredo, Texas — stopped to allow multiple illegal immigrants to bail out before continuing to evade Troopers. Cantu eventually abandoned the vehicle and tried to flee on foot but was quickly arrested.

Troopers apprehended eight illegal immigrants, who were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol. Cantu admitted to being paid $250 per person he smuggled and was charged with eight counts of smuggling of persons and evading arrest.

As part of Operation Lone Star, Texas DPS continues to disrupt criminal smuggling organizations and arrest human smugglers through a whole-of-Texas approach to combat human smuggling.

Each year our personnel must complete a minimum amount of training to keep our Peace Officer Standards current for the State of California. Yesterday, we caught a glimpse of Deputies taking part in this year’s annual refresher training course at the Tactics and Survival Unit focusing on safety, teamwork, and up-to-date response practices. During the course, deputies are also updated on laws or policies that have changed to affect the way we police.

Staying prepared means keeping our community safe.
