Police in Hong Kong fired tear gas on Saturday at protesters who defied authorities' warnings not to march in a neighbourhood where six days earlier a mob apparently targeting demonstrators brutally attacked people in a train station. Protesters wearing black streamed through Yuen Long, even though police refused to grant permission for the march, citing risks of confrontations between demonstrators and local residents. For the protesters, it was a show of defiance against the white-clad assailants who beat dozens of people last Sunday night, including some demonstrators heading home after the latest mass protest in the summer-long pro-democracy movement. 😱 #retract

Russian president Vladimir Putin dived to the bottom of the Gulf of Finland aboard a submersible to explore a Soviet submarine which was sunk during World War Two. The Shchuka-class submarine Shch-308 sunk in October 1942 near the island of Gogland, west of St Petersburg, the Russian capital. The hull of the sunken submarine was discovered in September 2018 lying on the seabed north of Bolshoi Tyuters Island. It is thought to have been sunk after hitting a German mine and all of the 40-man crew were killed.
