A new analysis of federal data on opioid shipments, released last week by a court in Ohio, reveals a staggering statistic. According to the Associated Press, there were enough drugs shipped into the US in 2012 for every adult and child in the country to have a nearly 20-day supply. That was just the average: some counties in the impoverished Rust Belt could have dished out 100-day supplies to every citizen that year. 'It shows it wasn't just the number of pills being shipped that increased. The actual amount of opioids being prescribed and consumed went up,' Anna Lembke, a Stanford University professor who researches opioids and is serving as a paid expert witness for plaintiffs in the litigation, told the AP.
