🎉 Today we honor Detective John Affeld for an incredible 50 years of service with the South Gate Police Department! 🎉

Detective Affeld began his law enforcement journey on April 14, 1975. Over five decades, he has served in nearly every division – from patrol and the gang unit to detective work, park patrol, bike patrol, and the narcotics unit. In 1989, he played a key role in the historic Sylmar drug bust – the largest cocaine seizure in U.S. history (21 tons of cocaine worth $6 billion, plus $10 million in cash). This case was so notorious it was featured in the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico, and Detective Affeld is the only remaining active officer from that operation. He continues to serve our community today, faithfully patrolling the streets of South Gate 🚔.

A half-century career in law enforcement is extremely rare, and Detective Affeld’s unwavering dedication, courage, and passion for service are an inspiration to us all.Thank you, Detective Affeld, for your extraordinary 50 years of service to South Gate. 👏🙏
