Let there be light: Power is restored to Manhattan after transformer fire plunged swathes of city into darkness, trapping thousands in pitch black subways and elevators, and canceling Broadway shows - on the ANNIVERSARY of 1977 blackout ๐Ÿ˜ฑ #NYC
Cheers were heard across large swathes of Manhattan as the lights flicked back to life after an hours-long outage caused chaos in the city. The blackout was reported in Midtown, Times Square, Hellโ€™s Kitchen, and other parts of Upper Manhattan, with subway stations affected and street lights out. The New York City Fire Department said the cause of the outages, which left more than 73,000 Con Edison customers without power, was a transformer fire which started at West 64th Street and West End Avenue on the Upper West Side. No deaths or injuries were reported due to the blackout, which officials said began at 6.47pm and darkened a stretch of the city from West 42nd Street to West 72nd Street, 42 years to the day from a major 1970s blackout that sparked rioting and looting. #NYC

On July 13, 1977, lightning strikes wiped out a power line in Westchester causing the Indian Point generating station that lit most of the city to crash as well. The damage during the 25 hour blackout was vast - the New York Times reported that 1,000 fires were set by arsonists and 1,600 stores were ransacked. A reported 3,373 people were also arrested for looting and vandalism. Thieves stole cars, jewelry, televisions and even large pieces of furniture. A steep economic decline along with rising crime rates and the war on drugs made for an already gloomy Big Apple that was just further darkened by the Son of Sam murders that gripped the city. ๐Ÿ—ฟ #history #NYC

Reports of immigration officers apprehending people in the US illegally circulated on social media on Saturday as Donald Trump confirmed raids would begin the following day. POTUS said that agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), would conduct a series of raids on Sunday to deport immigrants with outstanding orders to leave the country. Trump said the raids would primarily target those with a criminal record, but immigration advocates say the agency is increasingly targeting families who have recently entered the country. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Hong Kong's streets have once again descended into violence as protesters clashed with police who fought back the masses with riot shields, batons and pepper spray. Thousands of demonstrators marched on the border town of Sheung Shui today to rail againstโ€ฆ
Journalists in Hong Kong have marched through the city today, as thousands of others rallied in an area popular with shoppers from mainland China following heavy clashes on the streets yesterday. Hundreds of reporters marched from the Admiralty district near government offices through to the police headquarters, while many more descended on the Sha Tin shopping district. Sha Tin, a town between Hong Kong island and the Chinese border, has previously been a battleground by those angered by the flood of Chinese day-trippers. Yesterday there were violent scenes in another border town - Sheung Shui - as demonstrators fought police wielding riot shields, batons and pepper spray. #retract
