Log in to Telegram via Passkeys Without Codes or Phone Numbers In the future, Telegram plans to introduce authentication via Passkeys. The first signs of this feature have appeared in the Beta version of Telegram for Android 12.2.8. The key advantage of…
Telegram Launches Passkey Auth Worldwide

Telegram added Passkeys as a login method, now rolling out globally. The key advantage of Passkeys is the ability to log into your account with a single touch, without entering your phone number and looking for an OTP code.

How to create a passkey:
β€’ Ensure you have the latest version of the app (Android β€” 12.2.10; iOS β€” 12.2.3).

β€’ This new feature must be configured in advance. Go to Settings β€Ί Privacy and Security β€Ί Passkeys.

β€’ If the "Passkeys" option is missing, it is not yet available for your account.

β€’ Tap "Add Passkey" and confirm its creation.

β€’ Your device may request your screen lock code or biometrics to unlock the key storage.

β€’ The created key will appear in the list.

How to log in using a passkey:
β€’ On the latest version of Telegram for Android or iOS, the app will automatically offer to select a passkey for login.

β€’ If this doesn't happen, a "log in with passkey" link will appear under the "Your phone number" header after a few seconds β€” tap it.

β€’ Tapping the button launches your password manager, which prompts you to select a key, verifies your identity via face, fingerprint, or screen lock PIN, and then transmits the selected key to the messenger.

β€’ The passkey functions as both the phone number and the one-time verification code simultaneously.

β€’ If you have Two-Step Verification enabled, you will still need to enter your password you've set in Security settings.

Q&A:
1. Can I register a new account with a Passkey?
No, this feature works only as an alternative to logging in via SMS or email.

2. What happens if I lose my phone?
The key is stored on the device where it was created, but it can be synced with other devices via Google Password Manager, iCloud Passwords, or other applications.

You can check your password manager settings on your device:
β€’ On Android: Open "Settings" and search for "Google Autofill". Ensure the correct Google account is selected in the password manager.
β€’ On iOS: Open "Settings" and tap your name at the top. Select iCloud β€Ί Passwords. Ensure sync is enabled.

3. What if my phone or key is stolen?
The Passkey is securely stored in the encrypted enclave of your password manager β€” it cannot be intercepted or entered on a phishing site. Additionally, you can always remove the key associated with your account in Telegram's Security settings.

4. Are third-party password managers supported?
Yes. If you use a password manager that supports Passkeys (e.g., Bitwarden, KeePassDX) and enable it in your system's autofill settings, you can save your Telegram passkey there.

5. Which clients support Passkeys?
Keys are supported on the latest versions of official Telegram apps for Android, iOS, and Telegram Desktop (Windows only β€” requires Windows Hello).

Not supported: Telegram Desktop on macOS and Linux, Telegram for macOS (Swift), Telegram WebK and WebA, Telegram X. Any unofficial apps won't be supported in this update due to Passkey security requirements.

6. Can I have multiple keys for one account on one device?
Yes. A list will appear on the login screen, allowing you to select the desired profile.

7. What's the maximum number of passkeys I can have?
Up to 5 on a Telegram account

Passkey Notifications

Adding a crucial behavior that was absent at the launch of the feature, when a new passkey is added to your account, Telegram now sends out a notification to all your signed in devices β€” just like the one you get when you add a new device.

Previously, the lack of these notifications posed a security threat: attackers could silently add their passkeys to anyone's account.

The notifications will include the following information:

β€’ Passkey provider (for example: πŸ”’ Apple Passwords).
β€’ Device details: app version, phone model, and OS.
β€’ Location from which the passkey was added.
β€’ Instructions for listing active sessions.

Important security considerations

β€’ Also when deleting a passkey, the user will receive a notification to all its signed in devices.
β€’ When all active sessions are terminated via Β«Settings β€Ί DevicesΒ», recently created access keys are automatically deleted along with the sessions. A notification about their deletions is sent afterwards.
β€’ It's only possible to add passkeys 24 hours after signing in.

Passkeys in Third-Party Telegram Clients

Instructions describing how Passkey authorization works for third-party clients have appeared in the Telegram API documentation.

The main caveat of this new feature is that Passkeys will not be universal. You will not be able to log into the official Telegram app using a passkey created in a third-party client (and vice versa).

As a reminder, late last year Telegram added support for Passkeys β€” a convenient and secure way to log into your account using biometrics or a PIN code without needing SMS. In our FAQ at the time, we clarified that this option was only available in official Telegram clients.

πŸ’¬ You can only use Passkeys to log into an existing account. Creating a new account still requires receiving an SMS code.

How This Will Work

Now, developers of alternative clients have the opportunity to implement this feature, but with a significant limitation:

Passkeys only work in the app where they were created. A Passkey from the official Telegram app will not work for a third-party client, and a key from a third-party app cannot be used in either the official Telegram app or any other unofficial builds.

Why Is This Happening?

This kind of isolation is not an artificial restriction imposed by Telegram, but rather a limitation of the Passkeys technology itself, which prohibits using keys on third-party websites and apps to protect against phishing.

The @tginfo editors note that the introduction of Passkeys support for third-party apps is a positive sign. Despite the technically inevitable fragmentation of keys, Telegram is not leaving users of alternative clients without modern security methods, providing them with a reliable alternative to OTP over SMS, which is expensive and sometimes unavailable in countries where Telegram is banned.
