A torrent of bomb threats emailed to universities, businesses, schools and news outlets Thursday from New York City to San Francisco sent police departments scrambling to sort out what appeared to be a nationwide electronic hoax aimed at extorting bitcoins from its targets.
The New York City Police Department said the threats were meant to cause disruption and compel recipients into sending money and were not considered credible.
There were no reports that any actual explosive devices had been discovered, but the threats alone had forced many police departments to monitor and investigate.
"We are currently monitoring multiple bomb threats that have been sent electronically to various locations throughout the city," The New York City Counterterrorism Bureau said on Twitter in the afternoon.
"These threats are also being reported to other locations nationwide & are NOT considered credible at this time," the statement said.
The emails were sent to tens of thousands of targets nationwide to dozens of cities, including Seattle, Orlando, Atlanta, San Francisco, Oklahoma City, and Detroit an continued for hours.

Two hunters eat the still warm heart of leader of pack of wolves after slaughtering the whole group.
Shocking footage has emerged of two hunters in Kazakhstan biting and eating the raw heart of a dead wolf. The hunters had slaughtered a pack of wolves after they killed their sheep overnight, but widespread condemnation online has accused the hunters of being the beasts. A few dozen villagers from an unspecified location in Kazakhstan were involved in the slaughter. #fools

Goodbye to the car dealership! Seven-floor car VENDING MACHINE that dispenses vehicles after buyers insert a giant coin opens in Indiana.
Online retailer Carvana opened the all-glass tower (pictured main) yesterday in Indianapolis with the motto 'Because car buying shouldn't suck'. The structure can hold 26 vehicles at one time and is the first of its kind in the state. Customers can shop more than 10,000 vehicles on Carvana's website and quickly schedule to pick it up from a vending machine or have it delivered to their home. Those who choose the vending experience will meet a Carvana employee at the tower, who'll give them an oversized novelty coin which they insert into a slot (top right). Within minutes, the car is released and they can immediately drive away.
