Ontario, Calif. -- A pursuit came to a violent end early Tuesday morning in Ontario after a driver was shot and killed by officers after ramming his car into several police cruisers. The incident began at 11:55 p.m. Monday when Ontario police officers attempted to pull over a car for a traffic violation. The car refused to stop, leading to a chase, Emily Hernandez, according to police spokesperson. At some point during the pursuit, the driver rammed into three patrol cars on Beverly Court, just north of 6th Street. This prompted officers to open fire on him, Hernandez said. He died at the scene. He was not identified. A female passenger in the car was not hurt. She was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant, Hernandez disclosed. No officers were injured either. It’s unclear exactly why police initially tried to stop the car.
The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board said a preliminary assessment has revealed that damage to a fan blade in the engine that failed on a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 is consistent with metal fatigue. The Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine failed with a “loud bang” four minutes after takeoff off Saturday from Denver, causing minor damage to the fuselage, NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt told reporters Monday after an initial analysis of the flight data and cockpit voice recorders. He said it was unclear whether the mishap is consistent with an engine failure on another Hawaii-bound United flight in February 2018 that was attributed to a fatigue fracture in a fan blade. The engine involved in Saturday’s incident on the 26-year-old aircraft is used on 128 planes — or less than 10 percent of the worldwide fleet of more than 1,600 Boeing 777s. He said the United incident was not considered an uncontained engine failure because the containment ring contained the parts as they were flying out.

A Florida sheriff’s deputy rescued a missing 13-year-old girl from a motel room where she had met up with a 22-year-old man she met online. Deputy Royce James was searching for an unidentified 13-year-old girl who went missing after school when he found her in a “dark motel room” with 22-year-old Tyler Thompson, Volusia Sheriff’s Office announced on Twitter. Officers had received a missing child report on Thursday around 6:15 p.m. after the girl’s grandmother notified police that she neither came home nor attended her after-school basketball game, according to police. James questioned the girl’s friend, who said that the victim planned on going to a motel with someone from the internet, police said. She told James she believed the suspect’s name might have been ‘Tyler.’ (Read More.)

Canada -- Ottawa’s chief of police says he has implemented new uniform standards that would see any alterations, including the controversial “thin blue line” patch, banned from officers’ on-the-job attire. Chief Peter Sloly said in his verbal update to the Ottawa Police Services Board on Monday evening that he has instituted a new policy, effective this week, that all OPS equipment and uniforms must be returned to the state they were first issued to them by the service’s quartermaster. Modifications, additions and any other personalized elements to an officer’s uniform must be removed under the new policy. “This includes any patches that are not officially approved and authorized by the service,” Sloly said. Sloly announced details of the new requirements in response to an inquiry from the board’s vice-chair L.A. Smallwood, who asked for an update on the board’s position regarding the “thin blue line” patches. (Read more.)

Tbilisi, Gorgia -- Police stormed the party offices of Georgian opposition leader Nika Melia and detained him early on Tuesday, deepening a political crisis that prompted the prime minister to resign last week. Seventeen people were hurt in clashes at the party’s offices, the health ministry was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying. Melia’s supporters used furniture to barricade themselves inside, prompting police to spray gas before officers led Melia away. Melia, chairman of the United National Movement opposition party, has been accused of inciting violence at street protests in June 2019, a charge he dismisses as politically motivated. The Interior Ministry said it had no option but to use coercive measures as activists had ignored numerous warnings not to obstruct their work and had declined to leave the building. It also said in a separate statement that its computer infrastructure had been hit by a cyber-attack from abroad.
