The House is set to bring the impeachment article against Donald Trump for the Senate trial. But a growing number of Republican senators say they oppose the proceedings.
House Democrats will carry the sole impeachment charge of "incitement of insurrection" across the Capitol late Monday evening, a rare and ceremonial walk to the Senate by the prosecutors who will argue their case. They are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again.
But instead, GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection. Now that Trump's presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.
"I think the trial is stupid, I think it’s counterproductive," said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. He said that "the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it" because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

Meanwhile, in Australia. Rallies have been held across the country to oppose the celebration of Australia Day on January 26, which protesters say should be a day of mourning. Invasion Day or Survival Day demonstrations have gained momentum in recent years and coincided with a push to move Australia Day to a date considered more inclusive. January 26 marks the anniversary of the First Fleet's arrival in Port Jackson, New South Wales, which is regarded by many Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians as the beginning of colonial oppression. Tens of thousands of people gathered for Invasion Day rallies in the nation's capital cities including Melbourne and Sydney, where demonstrators congregated in a packed Hyde Park.
LOS ANGELES - Outdoor dining will be permitted to reopen in Los Angeles County by the end of the week, county officials said Monday, as they work to align the county's coronavirus restrictions with previous guidance provided by the state.
Citing improving conditions in hospitals, state health officials Monday lifted all regional stay-at-home orders, including in the 11-county Southern California region, but counties are still subject to the tight regulations of the restrictive "purple" tier of California's economic reopening guidelines.
"Los Angeles County will essentially align with the state by the end of the week to allow for the reopening of permitted activities under the 'purple tier,'" said County Supervisor, Hilda Solis. "This will include outdoor dining."
The county will allow outdoor dining at restaurants to resume at 50% of patio occupancy when a new health officer order is enacted Friday.
Full guidance on restrictions for restaurants was expected later this week, county officials said.
