LA - A man is in custody after he led officers on a high speed pursuit through several counties in Southern California on Saturday afternoon. California Highway Patrol officers were in pursuit of a  a white van that represented "some sort of hazard" and was "speeding," CHP Officer Peter Nicholson said.

The chase began in Oceanside and headed north on the 5 Freeway. The van passed through the downtown LA area at about 3:30 p.m. and arrived in the Cahuenga Pass between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley shortly after.

The driver then continued on the northbound 101 Freeway and transitioned to the 170 Freeway. The pursuit ended when a California Highway Patrol car used a pit maneuver to stop the van they were chasing.

Los Angeles -- California may have paid out nearly $10 billion in phony coronavirus unemployment claims — more than double the previous estimate — with some of that money going to organized crime in Russia, China and other countries, according to a security firm hired to investigate the fraud.

At least 10% of claims submitted to the state Employment Development Department before controls were installed in October may have been fraudulent, Blake Hall, founder and CEO of ID.me told the Los Angeles Times.

The Times on Friday said that would work out to $9.8 billion of the benefits paid from March through September.

California, the nation’s most populous state, has processed more than 16 million unemployment benefits claims since March and paid out $113 billion. The Employment Development Department has struggled to keep up with the demand, facing intense pressure to work through a backlog that at one time numbered more than 1.6 million people.

The payout includes $43 billion from a federal expedited assistance program for independent contractors, gig workers and the self-employed that is less secure, the Times said.

The state has acknowledged that the department was bilked out of hundreds of millions of dollars in COVID-19 unemployment funds that went to fraudsters, including some in the name of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Others were sent to inmates in jails and prisons, including some on California’s death row.
BELL, Calif. - The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of military Humvee stolen on Friday in Bell. The theft of the $120,000 military vehicle occurred at about 8:15 a.m. Friday from the National Guard Armory, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. The Humvee is described a four-door high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle, Eimiller said. It was up-armored, upgraded and considered a combat vehicle. It is green camouflage in color, with a bumper number of 40BSBHQ6 and registration number NZ311R, she said. Assistance is being provided by the Bell Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The California Army National Guard is also supporting the investigation. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the Humvee is urged to call the FBI at 310-477-6565.
