FRANKFORT, KY. โ€” Only days after a protest at the U.S. Capitol, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear condemned a "patriot rally" on Saturday outside the commonwealth's statehouse. A photo advertising the event, posted in the "United Kentucky" Facebook group on Jan. 2, said it would be "the biggest patriot rally the state of Kentucky has ever seen." It turned out to be about 100 protesters, many armed, who showed up around noon to stand outside the Kentucky Capitol while both chambers of the General Assembly were in session. One armed protester who carried zip ties visibly attached to his backpack told a photographer he brought them โ€œjust in case.โ€ Kentucky Sens. Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell also drew sharp criticism, as did Beshear, who was roundly criticized for his executive orders designed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

After spending 76 days in jail, a white man who intentionally drove his vehicle through a crowd of BLM protesters in Iowa City last summer will have his record cleared and avoid prison if he stays out of trouble during three years of probation. Michael Ray Stepanek, 45, of Iowa City, drove his 1998 Toyota Camry through a group of protesters in late August, injuring at least one person, according to police. Stepanek told police the protesters needed "an attitude adjustment." He was charged days later with one count of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor, and one count of willful injury causing bodily harm, a class D felony. But last month, a district court judge dismissed the first charge and deferred the second. Judge Paul Miller also suspended a $1,025 civil fine, according to court filings. (Read More.)

TORRANCE, Calif. - Police were on scene at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance on Saturday evening. Officers from the Torrance Police Department and other South Bay agencies were on the scene. The disturbance started about 5 p.m. in the mall at 3525 W Carson St., said Torrance police Sgt. Alexander Martinez. The teens were "running around" the mall, but no looting or vandalism was reported, Martinez said. Officers helped mall security escort the teens out of the mall, although some lingered in the parking lots, he said. Police say the teens were mostly gone by about 6:45 p.m. Most stores closed when the disturbance started for the safety of their employees, Martinez said. He was not certain whether the mall would reopen, as it was scheduled to close by 8 p.m. Police warn to avoid the area until further notice.
