A new budget proposal suggests cutting 1,800 city jobs, including 951 sworn police officers from LAPD. A Financial Status Report showed a more than $600 million revenue shortfall that is expected to grow in the coming months as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the tax base. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti addressed the possibility of layoffs saying he wants it to be the last option and is pushing for federal assistance. "It is my hope though that in the next two weeks, we can have a slither of good news from Washington that can avert those layoffs and so that we can deal with other ways to close the budget," said stupid Garcetti. LAPD Officer Robert Harris, a director on the Board of the Los Angeles Police Protective League shared his thoughts about the proposal.
One of Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler’s campaign staffers was killed Friday in a multivehicle crash in South Georgia, forcing her and Gov. Brian Kemp to cancel their plans to join Vice President Mike Pence in Savannah for a rally. Deal died in a three-vehicle crash on I-16 East near Pooler Parkway around 10 a.m. Friday, according to Pooler police spokeswoman Lindsey Heintzman. Pooler is about 14 miles west of Savannah. Kemp and his wife announced they were also canceling their plans of meeting with Pence in Savannah after they received the tragic news about Deal. Police have not released the exact cause of the crash and are continuing to investigate. She added that others involved in the wreck suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. #RIP
Spokane County Jail officials on Friday stated a corrections officer shot and killed a woman in the lobby of the facility, the first fatal shooting the jail has recorded. Around 8 p.m. Friday, a woman came into the foyer of the jail, Spokane County Jail director Mike Sparber said. She pressed a button several times to be buzzed in by the receptionist. The receptionist was trying to figure out what the woman needed, but she did not respond and continued to “pound on the door,” Sparber said. Protocol called for a sergeant to respond. When he reached the door, it was open, meaning the receptionist unlocked it. The woman came in and was carrying “an edged weapon,” which Sparber said he believes was a knife. The officer told her to back away and disarm herself, Sparber said. The officer fired shots and the woman died. (Read more.)

In LA. Gov. Gavin Newsom also got some attention after his recently announced regional stay-at-home order. The crowd sprinkled in “recall Newsom” into their chants last night. As about 36 protesters marched up to Ferrer’s home, some neighbors provided a soundtrack using the theme from Curb Your Enthusiasm. Like with many of the recent Reopen protests, demonstrators expressed frustration with police for enforcing local ordinances.
