The University of Iowa is rejecting calls from eight former Hawkeyes football players who want $20 million in compensation for what they have said was racial discrimination. The black players were signees to the letter delivered to the university earlier this month. They also demand that athletic director Gary Barta, head coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant coach Brian Ferentz be fired over the discrimination allegations, according to the Des Moines Register. In rejecting the demands made in the letter, the school's president, Bruce Harreld, said, "Many of their concerns have been reviewed and addressed. And to be clear, any student-athlete that has left the university and did not obtain their degree is welcome to return, and we are here to support them."

The new Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga, is facing additional international pressure over the weekend, amid reports that Japan will be accelerating plans to dump millions of gallons of radioactive water directly into the ocean, Forbes reported. Reports have being widely circulated among Japan’s leading news agency and across international media that suggest the decision has already been taken by the new Japanese Government, and will be publicly communicated later this month. Over 1.2 million tons of radioactive cooling water from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant will be released. While the water will be treated, it will still be radioactive. 170 tons of new radioactive wastewater is generated each day and is stored in 1000 specially designed tanks.

Gun sales year-to-date in 2020 already surpass the total number of guns sold for all of 2019. #FBI figures provide an indicator of the surge in year-to-date gun sales, showing 28,826,449 National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) requests from January 2020 through September 2020, versus 28,369,750 for all of 2019. WGNTV quotes National Shooting Sports Foundation public relations director Mark Oliva saying, “We have already surpassed all of the guns sold last year and we are well on our way to surpassing our record of 2016.” Moreover, Oliva indicated that “40 percent of people buying guns in 2020 are first-time gun owners.” Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley Arms owner Kendall Knapik said, “I’ve been in the industry for about 10 years now, and this is probably the craziest we’ve ever seen it. It’s mostly shotguns, home-defense shotguns. Those were the first to sell out. Then, people moved to handguns once the shotgun manufacturers couldn’t keep up with the demand.” On October 4, 2020, Breitbart News reported that September 2020 was the ninth consecutive month of record NICS background checks. That means January 2020 saw more NICS checks than any January in history, February 2020 saw more than any February in history, March 2020 than any March, and so on, all the way through September. October 15, 2020, Breitbart News reported that Smith & Wesson stock was up over 130 percent for the year amid the run on guns, and Sturm Ruger Co.’s stock was up 42 percent.

LAS VEGAS — Police are investigating another fight on the Las Vegas Strip that led to a shooting. The incident happened just before 1 a.m. near Planet Hollywood. According to Metro Police, two men got into a fight on the pedestrian bridge and one of the men fired a shot. Investigators say no one was injured. The two men were arrested and a third fled from the area but was caught a few hours later. Last Monday, police investigated another shooting near Planet Hollywood. In that case, Metro Police say one man was shot and wounded during a fight outside the Miracle Mile Shops. There have been several fights and shootings on the Las Vegas Strip in recent weeks. Police have launched an effort to flood tourist areas with additional officers to keep the peace.
