LAS VEGAS — As violence reignites between Caucasus countries Armenia and Azerbaijan, a group in Las Vegas came together Friday to push for peace across the region. The sound of sadness echoed for 7,000 miles, as dozens of Armenian-Americans grieved for their homeland. “The silence of the world to us is deafening,” Lenna Hovanessian, Nevada Co-Chair of the Armenian National Committee of America said. “We as Armenians are concerned about our homeland,” Hovanessian added. “About our people over there and also that this could really start a global issue.” The situation stems from decades of tensions, as both countries fight over control of Nagorno-Karabakh. The region lies in Azerbaijan, but has been under the control of indigenous Armenians since the end of a separatist war in the mid 1990s. Local Armenian Americans are honoring the fallen, as reignited unrest continues between Armenia and neighboring country Azerbaijan.

LOS ANGELES - An up and coming rapper who boasted in a YouTube music video for his song "EDD," which is about getting rich from committing unemployment benefits fraud was arrested Friday in Los Angeles on federal charges of carrying out that very scheme by fraudulently applying for more than $1.2 million in jobless benefits, including by using stolen identities, federal prosecutors announced. Fontrell Antonio Baines, 31, who uses the stage name "Nuke Bizzle," was arrested on federal charges malleging he fraudulently obtained unemployment insurance benefits under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Baines who's from of Memphis, Tennessee, and currently resides in the Hollywood Hills, is expected to make his initial appearance Friday afternoon in Los Angeles federal court. The criminal complaint alleges three felony offenses -- access device fraud, aggravated identity theft, and interstate transportation of stolen property. If convicted of all of charges, Baines would face up to 22 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Prosecutors allege Baines exploited the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance provision of the CARES Act, which is designed to expand access to unemployment benefits to self-employed workers, independent contractors and others who would not otherwise be eligible.

BAKU — Azerbaijan on Saturday accused Armenia of striking its second-largest city with a ballistic missile that killed at least 13 civilians and wounded 50 others in a new escalation of their conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian Defense Ministry denied launching the strike, but the separatist authorities in Nagorno-Karabakh put out a statement listing alleged “legitimate” military facilities in the city of Ganja, although they stopped short of claiming responsibility for the attack. Azerbaijani officials said the Soviet-made Scud missile destroyed or damaged about 20 residential buildings in Ganja overnight, and emergency workers spent hours searching in the rubble for victims and survivors. Scud missiles date back to the 1960s and carry a big load of explosives but are known for their lack of precision. In a televised address to the nation, Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, denounced the missile strike as a war crime and warned the leadership of Armenia that it would face responsibility for that. While authorities in both Azerbaijan and Armenia have denied targeting civilians, residential areas have increasingly come under shelling amid the hostilities that have raged for three weeks despite Russia’s attempt to broker a cease-fire.

PARIS, FRANCE — A suspect shot dead by police after the gruesome beheading of a history teacher in an attack near Paris on Friday was an 18-year-old Chechen, police said. France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said that authorities investigating the horrific killing of the man in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine have also arrested nine suspects, including the grandparents, parents and 17-year-old brother of the attacker. The teacher had discussed caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad with his class, authorities said. A police official said the suspect in Friday’s attack armed was shot dead about 600 yards from where the teacher was killed. He was armed with a knife and an airsoft gun — which fires plastic pellets — and police opened fire after he failed to respond to orders to put down his arms, and acted in a threatening manner.

Facebook altered its algorithm to prevent articles from certain news websites from appearing on its newsfeed, a new report states. According to the Wall Street Journal, CEO Mark Zuckerberg approved the changes that would result in the websites receiving a cut in traffic and views three years ago. The move came after the social media giant originally announced in 2017 that it would be rejigging its newsfeed to minimize the presence of political news and focus instead on posts from friends and family. That decision was made in the wake of the 2016 election when Facebook had been accused of allowing sharing and posting of misinformation on its platform that affected voters. Yet, according to the WSJ, executives at Facebook were concerned that these algorithm changes would have more of an effect on right-wing publications, such as the Daily Wire, then those on the left.
