LOS ANGELES - The 115,796-acre Bobcat Fire may have been caused by vegetation coming into contact with a Southern California Edison overhead conductor, the company said Monday in a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission. U.S. Forest Service investigators have not discussed the details of the investigation with SCE, but the company told regulators, "SCE understands that in addition to retaining SCE's overhead conductor, USFS also removed and retained three tree branches in the area. SCE is investigating the cause of the ignition and the 12:16 p.m.relay on its system, and evaluating whether vegetation in the area could have been a factor, including whether vegetation may have encroached within the minimum clearance distance or contacted the section of the overhead conductor retained by USFS." The fire was reported near Cogswell Dam in the Angeles National Forest at 12:21 p.m. on Sept. 6, and a section of SCE's Jarvis 12 kV circuit in the area experienced a relay operation at 12:16 p.m., SCE reported. A camera at Mount Wilson captured smoke in the area as early as 12:10 p.m. On Sept. 16, SCE removed a 23-foot-long line of the conductor for theU.S. Forest Service to use in their investigation. The fire's containment reached 92% Sunday, as more than 300 firefighters continued to work the 115,796-acre blaze that's been burning for over a month. The full containment date for the fire is projected to be Oct.30. The blaze has destroyed 171 structures, including 87 residences, and damaged 47 structures, including 28 residences. The Nature Center at the Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area was destroyed, according to Los Angeles County parks officials. All evacuation orders have been canceled and most roads have been reopened, with the exception of Big Santa Anita Rd (the Chantry Road). Temperatures gradually cooled over the weekend, but increased to the 90s and low humidity Monday, increasing fire danger. The cost of fighting the fire has not been determined.

Heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Delta triggered flash flooding and violent weather across the Southeast on Sunday — even washing out tracks, which led to a train derailment in Georgia. The Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services said in a news release that a CSX train with about 170 cars, including three locomotives, ran off the track around 1:45 a.m. Sunday. Officials said a total of 38 cars derailed, which sparked a small fire. The fire involved “hazardous materials,” spokesperson Justin Wilson said. The agency shared photos on social media of smoky air over buildings in the city northeast of downtown Atlanta. Officials went door to door evacuating homes for starting at 2 a.m. as the pinkish-orange plume of smoke rose into the air.
A United Airlines flight made an emergency landing on Monday after a windshield reportedly cracked while going through a hailstorm. The flight was bound for Washington Dulles Airport, but had to return to Chicago O’Hare International Airport approximately an hour after it took off, according to data from Flight Aware.

A Florida sheriff's deputy was stabbed in the neck Sunday while chasing a suspect through a wooded area, authorities said. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office released body-camera footage of the incident showing deputies responding to a home in the Tampa suburb of Lithia to assist another agency with an involuntary mental health evaluation. Nicolas Furgason, 21, was cooperating with deputies when he fled after learning he would be admitted to a mental health facility under a state law that allows involuntary institutionalization. He ran into a wooded area and was pursued by Deputy Charles Williams on foot while another pursued him in a patrol vehicle. Williams caught up with Furgason on a trail and tried to de-escalate the situation, authorities said. (Read the Full Story.)

A fire in a textile business in a commercial building in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday morning spread to an adjacent building, and more than 100 firefighters were working to extinguish the flames. Crews responded to the 800 block of South Crocker Street, near Eighth Avenue, about 4:45 a.m. and found a fire outside the building that appeared to spread into the structure, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Pasco Police: Critical Incident Update on the RD 68 Officer Involved #Shooting. The Pasco Police Department released updated information on an officer involved shooting that occurred in July. The video provides body camera footage of the incident involving 33-year-old Santiago Ayala-Pineda, who reportedly reached for a gun while hiding in a vehicle, causing Det. Andy Corral to fire. Police Chief Ken Roske says the Tri-Cities Special Investigations Unit is currently investigating the incident. Roske says they will not draw any conclusions until investigation is complete. Pasco Police Department is doing a separate, internal investigation.
