For Ricardo Moraes, a veteran photographer who for 11 years has documented for Reuters life in Rio de Janeiro's often dangerous cinderblock slums known as "favelas", work began at about 6 a.m. on Thursday, when he heard a radio report of a hostage situation in Sao Carlos, a sprawling tangle of hillside homes near the city center. The images he would capture - a young woman, kneeling over her husband's body, overcome with grief and surrounded by heavily armed police - ultimately would appear on the front pages of Brazil's two largest newspapers. They resonated in a city fed up with violence, where residents say shootouts among aggressive criminal gangs and a notoriously deadly police force are common. (More images.)

A St. Louis police officer who was shot while responding to a call Saturday has died, marking the latest round of summer violence in the Gateway City. Officer Tamarris Bohannon suffered a head wound when he was shot while responding to a late-afternoon call involving a gunman, St. Louis Police Commissioner John Hayden told reporters Saturday. After Bohannon was shot, one of the officers who was working to assist him was shot in the leg by the same suspect, Hayden said. Bohannon, who was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, died Sunday. Bohannon was the eighth St. Louis officer shot since June, Hayden said. He had been a member of the department for more than three and a half years, according to officials. #RIP
Three members of the Minneapolis City Council who voted to eliminate the local police force are being protected by a private security detail that costs taxpayers $4,500 a day. News of the arrangement broke Friday, the same day the council voted 12-0 to abolish the Minneapolis Police Department in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. โMy concern is the large number of white nationalist(s) in our city and other threatening communications Iโve been receiving,โ Councilmember Andrea Jenkins told Fox 9 News โ adding that she had been asking for private security ever since she took office in 2018. The city has spent $63,000 on rent-a-cops for Jenkins and fellow Councilmembers Phillipe Cunningham and Alondra Cano during the last three weeks after the three said they had received threats. But an MPD spokesperson said no complaints of threats against them had been filed. #facepalm

Police are investigating a shots fired call that came in during a Pro-Trump rally in Woodland Hills on Sunday. Three men supposedly holed up inside a WoodlandHills apartment after they may have fired on a caravan of Trump cars traveling along Ventura Boulevard were not there when police made entry into it, according to Los Angeles police. Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department say the call came in shortly after 11:30 a.m. near the 20600 block of Ventura Boulevard. The alleged shooting happened about as the caravan of Trump supporters moved along Ventura Boulevard near Chalk Hills, police said. Noone was hit if there was, in fact, a shooting. The caravan was headed from Woodland Hills to Studio City. Police say a woman who was not participating in the rally drove her vehicle eastbound on Ventura, past the caravan, and heard what sounded like gunshots. Police say she quickly noticed her tire was flat and noticed damage from some type of projectile. Police say it could possibly be a bullet or fragment of a bullet. According to police, another witness told officers of a potential suspect at a nearby apartment building. Officers soon locked the building and evacuated those nearby. A SWAT team was called to the barricade scene at 20568 Ventura Blvd. SWAT members made entry into the apartment at 5:30 p.m. but found no one inside, the #LAPD reported. No injuries were reported and the caravan continued as planned. The rally and caravan started Sunday morning near Taft High School and will end at Jerryโs Deli in Studio City.
