California utility companies are rolling out a massive blackout across the state that could impact some 250,000 homes and businesses, in an effort to curb electricity shortages as more people stay home during the pandemic. Grid managers last implemented such a power cut in 2001, when the state was suffering from an electric crisis. On late Friday, the California Independent System Operator declared a Stage 3 emergency, Bloomberg reported.

President Donald Trump said on Friday that he is readying $3,400 checks to go out to American families, but blamed Democrats for holding up a deal in talks that broke down a week ago. 'I've directed the secretary of the Treasury to get ready and send direct payments, $3,400 for a family of four to all Americans - Democrats are holding this up,' Trump said, echoing an earlier tweet. He said he wouldn't 'sit down with the Democrats personally' because they continued to want federal dollars to go to state and city budgets that have been cash-strapped due to the pandemic. 'Cuz they want $1 trillion to go their friends who are doing bad jobs running cities and states and they're doing very badly,' he said at the White House press briefing.

A New York man accused of torching a New York Police Department patrol car has been held without bail after police arrived at his apartment and found a smiley face spray painted onto the wall and the words: 'Too late'. Construction worker Sam Resto, 29, was arrested on Thursday at his work, having left the message in his Queens apartment to taunt the police earlier. Resto reportedly told police he 'had a feeling' they were coming for him. His passport was in his backpack and he admitted to the FBI that he intended to flee, prosecutors said. Resto had been arrested twice before the alleged arson attack - once on July 10 for 'allegedly swinging a chain' at someone during a parking dispute, and again on July 15 during an anti-police brutality protest on the Brooklyn Bridge. He was being watched by NYPD on the night of the attack, in the early hours of July 29.

An Oklahoma man who was arrested for shooting an unarmed woman in the back four times after she tore down a Nazi flag outside his home has claimed self-defense. Alexander Feaster, 45, was charged back in June over the shooting incident involving 26-year-old Kyndal McVey outside his home in the small town of Hunter, north of Oklahoma City. Feaster is accused of shooting the young woman four times with his AR-15 as she ran away from his home after stealing the Nazi flag on a dare. He was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon and shooting with intent to kill. Feaster has claimed in court documents that he is a 'patriotic citizen' and 'loyal American' who feared he was in 'imminent danger of death or great bodily harm' when McVey snatched the flag. The court documents were filed as Feaster argued for a reduction to to his $300,000 bond. In the court filings, Feaster argued that his political beliefs made him a constant target for threats.
