A San Francisco bus driver was allegedly beaten with a wooden baseball bat last week after asking three passengers to put on face masks to comply with the cityโs coronavirus public health order. Three men boarded the bus operated by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency โ or Muni -- in the city's South of Market neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, San Francisco Police Department Officer Robert Rueca said in a statement. The driver asked the passengers multiple times to wear a mask but they refused, so the driver pulled over to let them off. Officers responded to the scene on 11th and Division Streets around 3:30 p.m. to document the alleged assault. The men also allegedly spat on the driver before then getting off the bus, police said, citing unnamed Muni employees and a representative with Transport Workers Union Local 250A. The driver reportedly suffered a fractured finger and was recovering at home.
Police in Portland responded to reports of gunfire near the protest site and took two individuals into custody. The Oregonian reported that authorities responded to reports of gunfire in downtown Portland and an apparent victim was treated at a hospital after being taken there in a private vehicle. The report pointed out that it was not immediately clear if the shooting was related to the protest, which marked its 60th consecutive night in the city. KATU reported that the shooting occurred about a block from where protesters have been clashing with police and federal troops. Tweets from the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse indicate another large crowd late Sunday.
