Chicago cops unleashed tear gas and charged on protesters Friday night after they attempted to tear down a statue of Christopher Columbus and threw fireworks at officers. At least four protesters were injured after chaos erupted in Grant Park as hundreds of demonstrators gathered around the Columbus statue and vandalized it with graffiti. The protesters aimed fireworks at police guarding the statue to push them back before they tied the monument up with ropes and tried to drag it down. CBS reported that at least a dozen people were arrested. One had also sustained injuries that were being evaluated at the scene. Angry clashes were seen as the protesters were herded out of the area and cops removed the ropes from the statue.
MEXICO CITY - A video depicting a sprawling military-style convoy of one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels circulated on social networks on Friday just as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador visited the group’s heartland. In the two-minute clip, members of the fearsome Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) stand in fatigues alongside a seemingly endless procession of armored vehicles. “Only Mencho’s people,” members of the cartel shout, pumping their fists and flashing their long guns. The cry was a salute to their leader, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, one of the country’s most-wanted drug lords. The video’s release coincided with Lopez Obrador’s visit to the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco and Colima, some of the cartel’s strongholds. “They are sending a clear message... that they basically rule Mexico, not Lopez Obrador,” said Mike Vigil, a former chief of international operations for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Civil rights icon John Lewis, whose bloody beating by Alabama state troopers at Selma in 1965 helped galvanize opposition to racial segregation, has died at the age of 80 after battling pancreatic cancer. The Georgia congressman had been battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer since December and died after receiving hospice care in Atlanta. Lewis kept up the fight for civil rights and human rights until the end of his life, inspiring with others with calls to make 'Good Trouble.' #RIP

Two FBI special agents were shot while attempting to serve a search warrant Friday morning at a home in Mesa, Ariz., according to reports. The suspect, an alleged serial bank robber, was found dead inside. The agents were shot as they approached the suspect’s door around 6 a.m. "Come out with your hands up!" one of the agents could be heard yelling to the suspect on cell phone video of the incident. "This is the FBI. We have a warrant." One agent was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released and the other agent was treated for minor wounds at the scene. "The FBI guy was down," witness Michael Scott said. "He took off his jacket. He was all right. I think it went through his vest. He was bleeding." The suspect was identified as Abraham Rivera, 49, who was accused in at least four bank robberies at three banks in the state since last year.

A suspect who went on a stabbing spree inside a Colorado strip club Friday night was later fatally shot by one of his victims. The unidentified suspect had stabbed a security guard and three other people inside Shotgun Willie’s bar in Glendale, near Denver, before the security guard shot and killed the suspect. FOX 31 of Denver reported. Police did not reveal the gender of any of the people involved. The medical conditions of the wounded people was not immediately known. All were taken to Denver Health Medical Center. The incident began shortly before 10 p.m. What prompted the stabbings was not immediately clear. It wasn’t clear how many people were inside the club at the time of the incident. The same bar was the scene of the death of a 48-year-old man in May 2019 following a fight, Denver’s KUSA-TV reported. The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office later declined to file charges in the case, citing a lack of evidence, the report said.
