President Trump took the stage in the shadow of Mount Rushmore on Friday night to condemn what he described as a "merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children" in an address to mark the beginning of Independence Day weekend. "This monument will never be desecrated," the president vowed early in his speech. The president also castigated left-wing activists and practitioners of so-called "cancel culture" who have targeted statues and monuments of historical figures across America in recent weeks. "This movement is openly attacking the legacies of every person on Mount Rushmore ..." Trump said. "Those who seek to erase our heritage want Americans to forget our pride and our great dignity, so that we can no longer understand ourselves or America’s destiny. In toppling the heroes of 1776, they seek to dissolve the bonds of love and loyalty that we feel for our country, and for each other."

A police officer was fatally shot outside a Home Depot store just after midnight Saturday in Toledo, Ohio. The officer was identified as Anthony Dia. “It is with deep regret that we announce the loss of Toledo police officer Anthony Dia, who was shot and killed in the line of duty at approximately 12:03 tonight (Saturday morning,” Toledo fire Chief Brian Byrd said. Multiple gunshots were heard in a social media video posted from the crime scene. Eyewitnesses say they saw the suspect shoot the officer, who was responding to a call about a person causing a disturbance in the parking lot. A vehicle plowed through a protest-related closure on a Seattle freeway, striking multiple protesters, including two women who suffered serious injuries. The hit-and-run incident occurred shortly before midnight on Interstate 5 and the two victims, both in their 20s, were rushed to Harborview Medical Center, Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson. Video of the crash on social media showed a white car striking the women, who flew into the air before landing on the ground. The Seattle Fire Department said one of the victims was in critical condition while the other is stable with serious injuries. State troopers and officers from the Bellingham Police Department chased the vehicle as it fled, and nabbed the suspect. Both he and his passenger were uninjured, Trooper H. Axtman. The unidentified suspect - 27-year-old man from Seattle, according to The Associated Press - was booked in the Whatcom County Jail. Police said he is the same person who attempted to elude officers in another incident two weeks ago.
Three Aurora, Colo., police officers linked to controversial photos snapped at the site of a memorial for Elijah McClain were fired Friday, according to reports. The firings came after a fourth officer linked to the photos resigned from the Aurora Police Department earlier in the week. The photos were taken last October, about two months after McClain, 23, died following a police stop that involved a chokehold against him. In at least one of the photos, the smiling officers appear to mock the chokehold at the memorial site. Fired Friday were officers Kyle Dittrich, Erica Morrera and Jason Rosenblatt. Officer Jaron Jones resigned. Previously, Rosenblatt was one of three officers reassigned to “non-enforcement” duties in connection with McClain’s death last August. The two other officers were identified as Nathan Woodyard and Randy Roedema.
