Mississippi Governor Backs the Vilified Armed Couple; Husband Speaks Out After the Incident. The armed couple who became the scorn of the nation after ordering protesters out of their compound has received support from the Mississippi governor. Governor Tate Reeves released a statement on Facebook in solidary with the couple saying they were within their rights to act the way they did. Reeves said although the protesters possibly had peaceful intentions, the country has become accustomed to violence from protesters.

The Los Angeles City Council voted today to cut the LAPD Headquarters budget by $150 million. The only opposing votes came from Councilmen John Lee, a former Republican-turned-independent, and Joe Buscaino, a Democrat and former police officer. Those in favor of cutting the police budget are all Democrats. The Budget and Finance Committee had approved the cuts earlier this week. #facepalm
Firearm-related background checks reached 3.9 million in June, the most since the tracking system was created more than two decades ago amid multiple crises in the coronavirus pandemic, an economic downfall and protests over police brutality and racial injustice. The lastest numbers are the most since the FBI began tracking such checks in 1998. More than 19 million checks -- a key barometer for gun sales -- were conducted in the first half of 2020, more than all of 2012 and many years prior. Gun sales usually see an uptick in presidential election years over fears an incoming president could restrict access to firearms. Gun sales soared in March as governments across the United States began issuing stay-at-home orders and other unprecedented lockdown measures as the coronavirus took a grip across the country. The group said 40 percent of those purchasing firearms are first-time buyers.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Tuberville's "The People vs. The Swamp" campaign bus went up in flames Wednesday night on the side of a north Alabama interstate. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office posted on social media that a lane of Interstate 59 was shut down after a recreational vehicle caught on fire. The photos showed the Tuberville campaign bus ablaze. The sheriff's office said the driver escaped uninjured.
A three-story Brooklyn building housing a gym collapsed Wednesday afternoon, leaving one person injured and a massive pile of rubble and debris strewn on the street. The building at the corner of Court and Union streets in Carroll Gardens came crashing down at around 4:30 p.m. in the tony neighborhood. Officials said that the building – home to Body Elite Gym for the past 36 years – was vacant at the time of the collapse. But the man who was injured was inside the building’s second-floor and was able to escape with minor injuries, FDNY officials said. He was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. The #NYPD was seen using #K9 units to search the wreckage in the immediate aftermath of the collapse.

Protesters in Portland, Ore., reportedly started a bonfire underneath the historic Elk statue near the federal courthouse and ripped off wood boards protecting the building's windows to use for firewood and barricades. Protesters threw water bottles and other projectiles as police fired pepper balls and at least one flash-bang at protesters in front of the courthouse. Demonstrators also reportedly set off fireworks in the direction of the Multonomah County Justice Center. Protesters lined up and kneeled in front of the federal courthouse holding barricades in front of themselves while police, stationed inside the building, fired pepper balls if they got too close. The protest comes one day after Portland police declared a “riot” and arrested dozens of protesters while trying to clear the crowd.
