A man was shot Monday after gunfire erupted at a demonstration in New Mexico, where protesters attempted to topple a bronze conquistador's statue outside an Albuquerque museum. The man was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in critical but stable conditiond. The shooting occurred during a clash between protesters and the New Mexico Civil Guard, a heavily armed civilian group that attempted to protect the controversial sculpture — a monument that features Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate, according to the Albuquerque Journal. Protesters reportedly wrapped a chain around the statue and started tugging on it amid chants of “Tear it down.” At least one person swung a pickaxe at the statue of New Mexico’s 16th-century colonial governor. Gunshots could be heard down the street just moments later, with several people yelling, "Somebody got shot," according to the Journal. About five shots were fired by a single gunman after protesters started advancing on him.

Meanwhile in Paris, France. Right now, in the square in front of the Palace of the Disabled, protesters are attacking policemen, riot police use tear gas and rubber bullets.

Portland police declared a "civil disturbance" after overnight protests turned violent and resulted in 10 arrests on Monday and at least one police officer injured after protesters threw objects at law enforcement officials. Earlier on Monday, the outer fence around the Justice Center was removed by police "to show our willingness to have dialog and peaceful communication toward starting to heal our community," the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement. Fence still remained around the perimeter of the property, but police said groups of demonstrators threw projectiles using slingshots over the fence and pointed lasers in officers' eyes. An officer, who was struck in the head with a large rock, was rushed to a local hospital. A store was looted and a fire was set at a nearby location. As firefighters and officers worked to contain the blaze, rioters threw glass bottles and other objects at officers.

Meanwhile in Paris, France.

A wildfire on California's Central Coast quickly grew to several hundred acres on Monday, forcing the evacuation of residents in the area. Cal Fire said as of Tuesday morning the Avila Fire burned about 400 acres north of Pismo Beach and was only 10 percent contained. The blaze began as a vegetation fire at around 3 p.m. but then spread. Firefighters reported the blaze was spreading at a rapid rate, and they were battling the fire with aircraft dropping fire retardant. Highway 101 was closed for several hours as the wildfire raged, but lanes were reported open by late Monday night. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said as of 9:30 p.m., evacuation orders were lifted for all areas except for four streets in the Pismo Beach city limits.
