A combination of dry weather and record heat in recent days has led to several wildfires in California, forcing some evacuations. Officials in Ventura County issued an evacuation order for a remote area of Piru located about 48 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles for a blaze known as the Lime Fire. The blaze broke out Wednesday afternoon near the Lake Piru campground and has burned about 450 acres so far. Fire officials said Thursday that two minor injuries have been reported so far, and the fire is 20 percent contained. Firefighters told the blaze has the potential to reach 1,000 acres and at least 25 structures are threatened. Over 125 firefighters are on the scene. The blaze, which is spreading quickly, is burning in an area where the terrain makes access difficult. Officials said that fire was about 70 percent contained as of Thursday morning.

A Connecticut State Police trooper was almost struck by an unsecured load of steel pipes that fell from a tractor trailer on a highway on Wednesday. The trooper was at the scene of a crash on northbound I-95 when an oncoming tractor trailer slammed on its brakes causing two of the pipes to dislodge and travel into the cab of the tractor trailer, out the windshield and into the path of the trooper. Luckily both the trooper and the driver of the truck escaped injured. A dashboard camera video released by the Connecticut State Police shows the incident unfold as the trooper was set back behind another trooper who was blocking the left lane due to the crash leaving a car disabled in that lane. "Whether operating a passenger car or commercial motor vehicle, it is imperative to check and secure your load prior to operating the vehicle. In addition, always be aware of your surroundings, specifically when travel ways become congested," officials said in a statement.

Police in Oklahoma City released new videos this week showing a handcuffed black man repeatedly begging for air before dying at a hospital last year. “I can’t breathe," 42-year-old Derrick Scott, who was armed, told officers multiple times — using the same final words uttered by George Floyd, Eric Garner and other black men killed in police custody in recent years, the Officer reported. The latest videos, captured by the officers’ body-worn cameras, were made public this week after demands from the Oklahoma City Black Lives Matter group and local news outlets. The disturbing footage has raised questions about the officers’ response and whether they did enough to try to save the suspect’s life.

A 33-year-old man allegedly walked into a New York hospital Tuesday night wearing a tactical vest and carrying "operable" homemade bombs, a BB gun, a hatchet and handcuffs, authorities said. He was arrested at the scene at Stony Brook University Hospital, and investigators allegedly later found more explosives at his home. Robert Roden and his live-in partner arrived at the emergency room around 9 p.m. because the unidentified partner had a medical issue, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart told reporters in a conference call Thursday, Fox 5 reported. Roden was denied entrance to the patient area due to restrictions put in place amid the COVID-19 crisis, according to a hospital spokesperson. He then went into the waiting area restroom. When officers arrived, they took Roden out of the building and into custody. They said they found a BB gun and then searched his bag -- where they found what turned out to be the explosives.
