Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Shay Mikalonis was shot in the head during protests Monday night and remained in grave condition Tuesday. Gov. Steve Sisolak on Tuesday activated additional Nevada National Guard troops to help state and local police in Southern Nevada, where protests have turned deadly. The additional troops, activated in response to a โ€œlocal request,โ€ will not be on โ€œthe front lines, making arrests or doing crowd control,โ€ a statement from the governorโ€™s office said. โ€œTheir mission is to act as support personnel and they will focus on protecting critical facilities, preserving public safety, and allowing individuals to exercise their rights to peacefully demonstrate,โ€ the statement said. Over the weekend, Sisolak activated two Guard units, one in Northern Nevada and one in Southern Nevada. The officer, Shay Mikalonis, remained in grave condition Tuesday, police said. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Moody Police Sgt. Stephen Williams was shot and killed after responding to a call at the Super 8 motel Tuesday night. Chief Thomas Hunt identified the slain officer as Sgt. Stephen Williams. Williams, a 50-year-old father of three, had been a police officer for 23 years, the last three of those at the Moody Police Department. He began his law enforcement career at the Bessemer Police Department. The shooting happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. at the motel on Moody Parkway. A medical helicopter was sent for Williams, but the officer was instead taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital instead. Two suspects - a male and female - were taken into custody. Police had the motel where the officer was shot surrounded for hours. #RIP
