The New York Police Department is being rocked by the coronavirus outbreak, with more than 1,400 of its members testing positive to COVID-19 and 17 per cent of its uniformed force out sick. The shocking statistics were reported Wednesday morning by CNN, after NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea confirmed that five members of the nation's largest police force have now died in relation to the virus. NYPD Detective Cedric Dixon, 48, was the first member of the force to pass away from COVID-19, with four more civilian members succumbing to the virus in the past six days. The NYPD employs around 38,400 officers. 6,172 were off sick Wednesday - nearly 500 more than the number who called out sick the day before.
The US Surgeon General said on Wednesday that 30 days of social distancing would be long enough to slow the spread of coronavirus in some places but not everywhere. In an interview on Good Morning America, Surgeon General Jerome Adams also warned the public not to use precious N-95 surgical masks in light of an update by the CDC that it is considering advising that everyone should wear a face covering when they go out. 'The original 15 days was designed to slow the spread and for us to have some time to reassess. 'We learned good and bad things. No state has been spared, but when you look at places like Washington and California that aggressively mitigated with social distancing, they were able to flatten their curve.
The Pentagon will send roughly 500 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to assist that department's efforts to deal with the coronavirus. Two U.S. officials have said the Pentagon approved a request by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The United States already maintains an average of 5,000 troops at the southwest border to support Border Patrol by performing non-law enforcement duties. The latest deployment will bolster those ranks as border agents grapple with possible exposure to COVID-19, the disease cause by the virus.

A Deltona woman shot a serial burglar in her home early Tuesday morning, the fourth home the suspect is believed to have tried breaking into, Volusia County sheriffโ€™s officials said. The woman shot the suspect, Joseph Roberts, 32, in the arm after warning him several times to get out of her home while on the telephone with 9-1-1 dispatchers about him, investigators said. Roberts is charged with four counts of burglary of an occupied dwelling and four counts of criminal mischief. The woman who fired at him is not facing any charges, said sheriffโ€™s spokesman Andrew Gant said. The woman fired one shot, hitting Roberts in the arm, and escaped to the back yard with her three kids and three of their friends. Roberts remained in the house, where he was located by responding deputies, Gant said.
The Pentagon is ordering 100,000 body bags as experts predict the coronavirus will claim the lives of more than 200,000 Americans and a new report has suggested the Trump administraion was warned about the threat of coronavirus three years ago but failed to prepare. By Wednesday evening the US death toll had surpassed 4,770 and 90 percent of the country was on lockdown to help slow the spread of COVID-19. With more than 215,000 cases, the government was expected to get the next 50,000 body bags from a stockpile, however preparations were being made to triple up as hospitals and morgues became overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients and were quickly running out of space in states such as California and New York.
Dr Tony Fauci, the country's leading virus expert, painted a grim picture for Americans on Tuesday when he warned that people should be prepared for 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus. President Donald Trump warned Americans to brace for a 'hell of a bad two weeks' ahead as the White House projected there could be 100,000 to 240,000 deaths in the US even if current social distancing guidelines are maintained.
On Tuesday, a forklift was used to help lift dead bodies onto a refrigerated truck outside the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York. The COVID-19 death toll in the city is 1,139 and 47,439 confirmed cases and hospitals have been using bed sheets to wrap bodies because they no longer have body bags.
As 93 of the nearly 5,000 sailors assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt, now docked in Guam, have tested positive for the coronavirus, the Navy is removing nearly 3,000 sailors aboard the U.S. aircraft carrier by Friday, Fox News reported. Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly made it clear that while several thousand will leave the ship, other sailors will remain on board in order to continue to protect the ship and run critical systems. He also said the situation โ€œwonโ€™t be resolved in the next couple of days.โ€ Navy officials said almost 1,273 sailors have been tested and, as of Wednesday, 593 of those tests came back negative. Officials are awaiting more results and more testing. Testing of the crew has "accelerated," Modly said, adding that only 200 sailors could be tested each day.

The son of Oklahoma City bombing co-conspirator Terry Nichols is facing multiple criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed burglary, from an alleged attack on a 67-year-old Las Vegas-area man. Joshua Isaac Nichols, 37 was arrested earlier this month in connection with the Feb. 6 attack. He is being held in a Clark County jail. He is charged with first-degree kidnapping of an older person with a deadly weapon, burglary while in possession, robbery, conspiracy and ownership/possession of a gun by a prohibited person. Authorities said Nichols held a jeweler at gunpoint inside his Henderson home and fled with $1,700, clothing, a cellphone and bracelets. Nichols moved to Las Vegas with his mother after her divorce from his father before his participation with Timothy McVeigh in the 1995 bombing that killed 168 people inside a federal building in Oklahoma City. The elder Nichols is serving a life sentence in federal prison. McVeigh was executed in 2001.
