⚠️ BREAKING NEWS! A mass alert telling millions of Ontario residents about a potential disaster at the Pickering Nuclear Station was a giant oops, say officials who took nearly an hour to recognize and admit the mistake. An announcement on cellphones in the style of an Amber Alert went out about 7:19 a.m. from the Ontario government, Ottawa Citizen reports. It told of an unspecified “incident” at the plant that houses eight nuclear reactors on the edge of Lake Huron in Pickering, east of Toronto. The advisory told people there had been no release of radioactivity, and that unidentified energy crews were at the plant. It said people nearby were safe “at this time.” Meanwhile there was no announcement from Ontario Power Generation, which owns the plant. Durham Regional Police told reporters they didn’t know of an incident. ☢️

The Canadian province of Ontario on Sunday apologized for wrongly raising the alarm about an incident at a massive nuclear power station near Toronto and blamed a training exercise mistake, Reuters reports. Angry local mayors demanded an inquiry, saying the emergency message about the ageing Pickering plant had caused unnecessary distress. At around 7:30 a.m. ET cell phone users across Ontario - the most populous of Canada’s 10 provinces - received an alert about the supposed incident. An several hours later the Ontario Power Generation authority said the message had been a mistake. The initial message said there had been no abnormal leak of activity from the plant, which is located on the shores of Lake Ontario some 30 miles east of downtown Toronto. #facepalm

A police officer was hit by a train while chasing a man accused of burglarizing a home. Polk County Police Officer Andy Anderson is now in the hospital with numerous broken bones, FOX 5 ATLANTA reports. Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd says Officer Anderson was trying to capture 18-year-old Jayden Moats. Officer Anderson had tracked moats from a home on College Street that had just been broken into. "He walked to the tracks and saw the suspect toting the stuff from the house down the tracks. He had a getaway car on the other side of Piedmont Avenue. He had a tv and a guitar when Andy saw him," said Chief Dodd. Officer Anderson was so focused on catching his suspect, he didn't realize how close he was to the train when it came speeding down the tracks. The train clipped him on the right side of his body. Officer Anderson was rushed to the hospital. He has 5 broken ribs, a broken arm, and a concussion.
A robbery suspect in Florida apparently blew up an ATM and stole an unknown amount of money in the latest cash machine explosion to hit the area, investigators said Sunday. The robbery unfolded between Saturday evening and Sunday morning at the Regions Bank on Bell Shoals Rd. in Valrico, east of Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook. Somebody painted the lenses of the surveillance cameras black before the explosion ripped apart the ATM, exposing its interior, deputies said. The sheriff’s office released photos of the scene showing ATM debris in the street, without saying what might have triggered the explosion. Deputies said they had yet to determine how much money was stolen. The incident was similar to two other cases that happened elsewhere in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties in recent months, Fox 13 Tampa reported.💥
A 58-year-old Belgian man who murdered both his parents in northern Virginia with a .22 caliber rifle in 1982 was removed to his home country Tuesday by officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, reported Breaking 911. Alain Paul DeCock was originally admitted to the United States as a nonimmigrant in August 1981. In December 1982, the Fairfax County Police Department arrested DeCock for two counts of murder and using a firearm during the commission of a felony. That same month, the U.S. Department of State terminated his nonimmigrant status. In March 1983, the Fairfax County Circuit Court convicted DeCock of the charges he faced, and he was sentenced to two life terms plus six years in prison. The former Immigration and Naturalization Service lodged a detainer with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office in April 1983, and the following year, an immigration judge ordered DeCock’s removal to Belgium.

Buffalo police officials say a pilot program is being tested by the department that gives tasers to officers in the B District. Police say officers were dispatched to a home on the west side of Buffalo Wednesday night around 11:40 p.m. According to officers, two people inside the home were trying to calm down a man who had a knife. At one point, the video shows the man lunged at the officers while they were inside the kitchen. The officers ran back into the living room, where they continued to talk to the man. One officer then drew a taser, asking the man to drop the knife. The man eventually complied with the officer's request. Buffalo police officials say the pilot program being tested by the department saved the life of the man in the video. In a normal situation, police say they would have possibly used a gun. Both officers are being heralded by the department for their restraint.🔫👮🏻♂️ #taser
