At least four deaths and more than 1,400 flight cancellations have been blamed on the Arctic blast that has wreaked havoc across the Midwest and Great Plains as forecasters reveal that 70 per cent of the United States will be hit with freezing temperatures this week. A 57-year-old man and two women ages 64 and 81 were killed in a head-on collision in Kalamo Township, Michigan. The crashes came as a weather system carrying freezing temperatures and strong winds moved from the Rockies to the East Coast. The quick-moving storm system is expected to affect at least 60 million people. Much of the snow that was supposed to fall in the Midwest has come down and now it's time for the record-breaking cold. Chicago's train tracks (bottom right) were set on fire by railroad workers to heat up the switches for the winter's frigid temperatures and to keep the trains moving along on Tuesday. More than 70 schools in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York state have canceled classes due to the snow. ☃️❄️

Fremont High School in South Central was placed on lockdown after several altercations on San Pedro Street around 11am. ABC 7 reports that the Los Angeles Unified School District school police said the ruckus began during a school demonstration that escalated into students attempting to leave campus. In addition to the more than a dozen police units parked outside the school premises, fire trucks and ambulances also arrived. Rocks and bottles were allegedly being thrown during altercations, with some of the objects aimed at police officers. The #LAPD told @police_frequency in the Telegram that although they were present, the situation was handled by school officers and the LAPD only provided assistance. 👮🏻‍♂️

In Australia, bushfires tear through a million hectares along the New South Wales mid-north coast and hit the outskirts of Sydney, officials have warned the worst may be still to come. Dozens of fires are burning from Nowra, south of Sydney, all the way to the Queensland border - after yesterday's deadly combination of scorching temperatures, strong winds and low humidity fuelled the flames. At 2am Wednesday there were 11 fires under emergency status but by 6am this had been reduced to two - one in Clarence Valley west of Coffs Harbour and one at Hillville near Forster. The 'catastrophic' conditions are expected to calm on Wednesday but NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said residents are not out of the woods yet. 🔥
