It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of retired Yuba County Sheriff Virginia R. Black.

Sheriff Black, born Nov. 22, 1944, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 1 in Sutter County.

Sheriff Black was first hired at the YCSO in November 1975 as a Sheriff's Clerk. She was promoted to Jailer in December 1976, Deputy Sheriff in November 1978 and Sergeant-Operations in May 1984.

In 1994, Sheriff Black transferred to the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office as an Investigator. Four years later, she was the first woman elected Sheriff in the State of California in June 1998. Sheriff Black took office in January 1999 and served two terms before retiring in 2006.

UPDATE: Deputies Critically Wounded at the Scene of a Domestic Violence Shooting

"Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported domestic violence shooting at a residence in the 18700 block of S. Smythe Road in South Spokane County.  With one victim shot, sustaining non- life-threatening injuries, and additional victims possible, the SWAT Team responded.  With the condition of the additional victims unknown, the SWAT Team and Deputies started to make exigent entry to attempt a rescue when they took gunfire from the residence.  The shots critically injured two Deputies as others returned fire.  The two injured Deputies were rushed to the hospital for critical care."

BREAKING UPDATE: California "voters" are rejecting a push for tougher voter ID requirements, with 60% voting against the measure as roughly half the ballots have been counted.

Proposition 39 would have required voters to show identification at the polls and added new verification requirements for mail-in ballots.

Republican Assemblymember Carl DeMaio, who spearheaded the effort, insists the fight is far from over, even as the Trump administration clashes with California officials over alleged noncitizen voting.

The measure sparked a fierce political battle, drawing millions in campaign funding and strong opposition from Democrats, who linked the proposal to President Trump. Despite the defeat, supporters say they will continue pushing for stricter election security measures.

NEW: Explosion and fire at chemical plant in Greenville, Mississippi; shelter in place orders issued.

"At approximately 7:09 a.m. today, November 4, 2026, the Greenville Fire Department was dispatched to a reported explosion at Loveland, located at 917 Platte Road in Greenville, Mississippi.

The fire originated in the hot box warehouse area and quickly spread throughout the facility. Multiple emergency response agencies responded to assist with firefighting operations. The fire is currently under control, and no injuries have been reported.

Herbicide chemicals have been confirmed inside the building, and a decontamination area has been established for emergency responders as a safety precaution.

The cause of the explosion and fire remains under investigation. We ask the public to avoid the area until emergency operations are complete and the scene has been declared safe."

Understand the implications of what happened in Texas last night.

Gina Hinojosa has called on Gov. Abbott to end state & local cooperation with ICE & she can order that on day one.

Hinojosa voted against the 2017 SB 4 as a TX state rep. The bill was essentially a sanctuary cities ban and required TX law enforcement to cooperate with ICE detainers. She then voted against another SB 4 in 2023, which made it a state crime to cross illegally into Texas.

Should there be another border crisis in coming years, there will likely be no resistance from Texas at the border. No Texas DPS, no TX National Guard, no razor wire or water buoys, and no Operation Lone Star, which Hinojosa called a “dog and pony show” and “political theater”. 

Remember when 15,000 Haitians surged illegally into Del Rio, TX in 2021 under the international bridge? That was only stopped because Texas DPS responded on Abbott’s orders and physically blocked further crossings by lining up their cruisers to form a wall. The Biden Border Patrol was caught off guard and offered almost no resistance, except for some horseback agents who were falsely slandered for “whipping”.

Additionally, because Republicans failed to pass any legislation codifying President Trump’s border security measures, if Dems take the White House in 2028, that Dem president could, if he/she wants to, reverse every single Trump border security policy immediately upon taking office because they were all done at the executive level, and they can order Border Patrol to go back to a passive catch & release policy like we saw under Biden.
