Critical Incident Update:
A Message from Chief Phil Galer

On Thursday, September 3, at approximately 3:45 PM Officer Jimmy Sanchez, a four- and half-year veteran of the police department, was violently attacked and shot while fighting for his life inside the Pittsburg Police Department booking facility.

Our preliminary investigation determined that officers arrested 31-year-old Michael Sanchez Gardner Martin for driving a stolen vehicle and outstanding felony warrants. He was searched at the time of his arrest and again after being transported to our booking facility. During both searches, the same officer failed to locate a firearm concealed in the suspect’s clothing.

That was a serious failure. We acknowledge it, and it will be thoroughly examined through an administrative investigation. We will determine how it happened and take immediate corrective action to prevent it from happening again.

But that failure cannot be allowed to obscure what happened next.

Based on our preliminary investigation and available evidence, after being placed in a holding cell, the suspect concealed the firearm inside a toilet. A few hours later while awaiting transport to county jail, he retrieved it and hid it beneath a jail blanket draped over his shoulders.

Officer Jimmy Sanchez, who was not the arresting or searching officer, later entered the booking facility. At this time the suspect asked him for water and told him he was not feeling well. Officer Sanchez brought him water and approached the cell to check on his welfare.

The suspect responded to that act of compassion by attacking him.

Without warning, he punched Officer Sanchez in the face, threw the blanket over his head and repeatedly struck him in the head with the firearm. The suspect then succeeded in firing a single round. Preliminary evidence indicates that round first passed through the suspect’s own thigh before striking Officer Sanchez in the lower abdomen below his body armor. Based on the evidence currently available, both gunshot wounds resulted from the single round fired by the suspect.

Officer Sanchez had been ambushed, beaten and shot. He still did not stop fighting.

His actions prevented the suspect from firing another round and gave responding officers the time they needed to enter the facility, disarm the suspect and end the attack. Those officers responded without hesitation and demonstrated extraordinary courage, discipline and restraint.

They then provided immediate medical aid to both Officer Sanchez and the suspect.

I want to make one very clear distinction. While the firearm should have never been allowed to make it into our booking facility, it was Martin who knowingly concealed, retrieved and then utilized that firearm to ambush, violently assault and ultimately try to take the life of one of our officers. That distinction matters and I do not want legitimate criticism of a failure of a young officer’s search to overshadow that fact.

Officer Sanchez did not survive because Martin stopped his attack or decided to change course. Officer Sanchez survived because he refused to give up. He survived because he fought through a brutal attack, a gunshot wound, and because he and his fellow officers physically ripped a gun away from Martin’s hands.

That is the story I do not want to get lost as we move forward through this traumatic incident.

As it relates to medical status. The suspect was treated at a local hospital and subsequently booked the same day into county jail on multiple felony charges including attempted murder of a police officer. Officer Sanchez underwent surgery for his injuries and is recovering with family and the department by his side. A third assisting officer was treated for minor injuries and is recovering.

I want to thank our community, elected officials and City staff for the extraordinary support they have shown Officer Sanchez, his family and our department. I also want to thank the first responders and medical personnel who cared for him, and the Pittsburg police officers who responded that day with courage, decisive action, professionalism and restraint.

In closing, several media stories have reported details of this incident citing “police sources.” I want to be clear these sources were not authorized Pittsburg Police informational releases. I have intentionally delayed this official release until our detectives and investigators from the Contra County District Attorney’s Office have had an opportunity to collect and review critical evidence and interview all applicable witnesses. This is still an active investigation and I do not plan on releasing any further information at this time. Our focus will remain on supporting our officers, their family and ensuring the integrity of this investigation as it moves forward through the criminal justice system.

It is with heavy hearts that the Wellston Fire Department, Oklahoma, announces the death of Firefighter Joe Flake.

Joe joined the Wellston Fire Department approximately four months ago. After retiring from a career as a truck driver, Joe wanted to continue serving by giving back to his community. He applied to join the department, successfully completed the same testing process required of every recruit, and earned his place on our roster.

On Monday, September 7, Joe was assisting crews at a large grass fire when he suffered a medical emergency. He was transported to the hospital, where he passed away later that evening.

We are grateful for Joe’s service, his willingness to answer the call, and his commitment to serving his neighbors. His service and dedication will not be forgotten.

On Monday afternoon, we received a 911 call for help on the Greater East Side after a good Samaritan spotted a child in a pond who appeared to be struggling to get out.

Saint Paul Police immediately launched one of our docked drones, flown by a trained officer. The docked drone arrived on scene two minutes prior to officers’ arrival and was able to provide them with essential information about the location and status of the child. Officers were able to pull the child safely from the water.

According to the child’s family, the child has autism and had wandered away from their home without them knowing.

Our ability to swiftly locate and guide officers to the child using our docked drone resources resulted in this positive outcome.

LA HABRA - UPDATE: A hazmat incident at 503 S. Cypress Street prompted a response from Los Angeles County Fire and La Habra Police at around 11:53 a.m. on September 8, 2026. Crews responded after a chemical leak created a large orange cloud at a family-owned commercial facility. At least three people were exposed to the unknown substance; none had been transported to a hospital as of the latest report. The business specializes in industrial cleaning products, water treatment, and hand sanitizers. As of right now it is not leaking into the air. It is preferable for those living nearby to use their air purifiers and run them at max.

UPDATE: A man dubbed "The Butt Sniffer," who was previously arrested on suspicion of inappropriate behavior at Southern California businesses, was sentenced Tuesday to 170 days in county jail.⁠

Calese Crowder, 39, was most recently arrested in August after stores in Glendale reported a man acting suspiciously and bending down around people. Crowder was arrested a short time later in the 100 block of South Brand Boulevard. ⁠

AGAIN AND AGAIN: A convicted felon was OUT ON BOND when police say he got into another gunfight and an innocent 16-year-old girl was killed.

Police say the teenager was an innocent bystander when gunfire erupted near the railroad tracks during Manassas’ crowded First Friday event.

Investigators believe 21-year-old Tasheem Rashad Douglas fired the shot that killed her. He is now charged with second-degree murder and multiple firearm offenses.

But this was not Douglas’ first run-in with police.

He was already a convicted felon, and in February police say he brandished a gun at Manassas Mall, fled from officers and ended up on the grounds of an elementary school.

Despite that, he was back out on bond when police say he became involved in another shooting.

Now a 16-year-old girl who had absolutely nothing to do with any of it is dead.

How many more innocent people have to die at the hands of criminals who were already arrested, already charged and then put right back on the street?

Karmelo Anthony’s family is asking the public for ANOTHER $250,000 for his legal fight after already raising hundreds of thousands of dollars — while Anthony is also using publicly funded attorneys.

Anthony was convicted of m*rdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf after st*bbing him at a Frisco high school track meet. He claimed self-defense, but the jury rejected that argument and sentenced him to 35 years in prison.

His request for a new trial was denied in August, and now his case is headed to appeal. APPARENTLY that means another fundraising campaign.

NBC 5 asked what happened to the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised before trial. A family supporter declined to answer, while Anthony’s attorneys later said the original defense cost more than $300,000.

If the public is being asked to hand over another QUARTER-MILLION DOLLARS while Anthony also has publicly funded legal representation, people have every right to ask exactly where all of this money is going.

Unbelievably, the fundraising campaign is WORKING. But where exactly is the money going?

NEW: U.S. Marshals Service officials announced Tuesday that they recovered 79 children reported missing or endangered during a monthslong operation across Ohio.

In Operation Meridian (August), U.S. Marshals recovered 79 missing or endangered children (ages 6–17) across Ohio, marking the largest missing-child operation in the state's history. Conducted with federal, state, and local partners, the operation targeted cases involving trafficking, abuse, and neglect in communities such as Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo. Authorities also assisted HUD-assisted housing residents, recovering specific victims like two sisters from 2024/2026 and a trafficking victim in Toledo. All recovered children were connected with medical, psychological, and reunification services.

A Milwaukee Police officer is shot and wounded, and a suspect is dead following an exchange of gunfire on the city's north side.

The call of a shooting came in around 5:50 p.m. at 37th and Wright.

Injuries to the police officer are described as not life-threatening.

A massive search is underway in the neighborhood for a potential second suspect.
