This was filmed last Monday morning at Veterinary Clinic in Richmond, Virginia.
The officer is Sergeant Paul Greer. He's 44 years old with the Richmond Police Department.
The dog is a nine-year-old German Shepherd named Kodak. Paul's K9 partner for eight years.
Paul and Kodak were paired when Kodak was fourteen months old. They went through sixteen weeks of handler training together in Chesterfield County. They worked patrol, search operations, and community events together for eight consecutive years. Paul estimates they logged more than eleven thousand hours on duty together.
Kodak retired from active service fourteen months ago when his health began declining. He went home with Paul, as K9 partners typically do when they retire. Paul converted the back bedroom into a dog room. Kodak slept on a memory foam bed beside Paul's side of the bed.
Over the past several months, Kodak's condition worsened gradually. His mobility declined. His appetite became inconsistent. Paul's veterinarian, Dr. Sarah Malone, had been monitoring Kodak carefully through regular visits and was honest with Paul each time about what she was seeing.
Last Sunday evening, Paul sat with Kodak on the back porch for a long time. He called Dr. Malone afterward.
The appointment was Monday morning at nine.

This week, our Airport K9 Team participated in the 19th Annual Reno K-911 training alongside explosives detection teams from local, state, and federal agencies.
Throughout the week, teams sharpened their skills through challenging, realistic scenarios in casinos, hotels, transit areas, arenas, vehicles, warehouses, and other complex environments. Operational training like this helps prepare our K9 teams to safely and effectively respond to bomb threats, conduct large-scale security sweeps, protect VIPs, and keep the public safe.

HERO ALERT: Luca Opperman saw In-N-Out workers being threatened with a jagged stick and literally DOVE THROUGH THE DRIVE-THRU WINDOW to help them.
The 20-year-old college student was waiting in line when he heard banging inside and saw employees fleeing from a woman swinging the stick.
Instead of sitting safely in his car filming the whole thing, Luca, a former gymnast and parkour instructor, jumped FEET-FIRST through the drive-thru window.
A witness said he came through "like Spider-Man."
Luca grabbed a metal spatula, confronted the woman and, when she kept swinging the stick, shoulder-checked her and took it away. LET'S GO!
Nobody was seriously hurt, and police later arrested the woman.
Most people would have watched from the safety of their car. Luca went through a window to protect complete strangers. We need more young men like this!

BREAKING OVERNIGHT: Cops sprung a massive sting on alleged street-racing hooligans in South Los Angeles early Saturday — reportedly detaining hundreds and preparing to haul away scores of vehicles.
