Residents near Manzanita Park, in the area of 22nd Avenue and East 28th Street, are asked to shelter in place at this time due to an armed suspect in the area.

Officers are actively searching for the suspect. Please remain indoors and avoid the area until further notice.

Officer-Involved Shooting in the area of 22nd Avenue and East 28th Street

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred around 10:30 a.m. on August 30, 2026, near 22nd Avenue and East 28th Street (Manzanita Park). OPD's Communications Division received calls about a man threatening to kill a female victim.

As officers arrived and exited their vehicles, the armed suspect fired at them. Officers returned fire but did not hit him. The suspect ran from the area, and officers quickly moved the victim to safety to be evaluated.

Additional officers were called to the scene, including OPD’s Tactical team, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) aerial support, and outside law enforcement agencies to set up a perimeter as the search for the suspect began.

With help from community members, officers located the suspect in an abandoned home in the 2600 block of 22nd Avenue. Just before 3:00 p.m., the suspect lit items on fire, threw them at officers, and set the home ablaze. For community safety, officers deployed a minimal amount of gas in an effort to force the suspect out. The suspect exited and fought officers as they tried to take him into custody. He was later taken into custody by OPD’s Tactical and K9 Teams and taken to a hospital for evaluation. The Oakland Fire Department extinguished the fire.

No other community members, including officers, were physically injured.

We appreciate the community’s ongoing support in our investigations.

In accordance with OPD policy, the officers involved in the incident will be placed on paid administrative leave.

Consistent with OPD policy, the OIS is under investigation by the Oakland Police Department. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the Community Police Review Agency (CPRA) have been notified of the incident.

NEW: Metro Nashville SWAT officer Joshua Baney, a 12-year veteran, shot Jason William Sexton, 54, three times on Cheshire Drive Saturday after Sexton stood outside his Hyundai with a sword.

It started over unpaid coffee at the Shell on Charlotte Avenue at 8 a.m.  Sexton left, then came back with a full-size sword.  The clerk locked him out, and Sexton yelled, "Come outside now, I'll kill you."  MNPD took a felony warrant for aggravated assault, a threat to kill someone with a weapon.

A relative later called 911 and said the family believed he was a danger, pointing to Instagram videos where he showed the sword.  A police helicopter picked up the Hyundai at a car wash on Dickerson Pike and followed him onto Cheshire Drive, where patrol spent more than an hour trying to talk him into putting it down.  A 26-year-old woman in the back seat told officers she was being held against her will, Kim Katie reports.

Baney had been sent to block the car with his truck.  Sexton died at Skyline.  The woman was not hurt.  Chief John Drake pulled Baney's police authority while TBI works the case for the DA.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is mourning federal wildlife officer David Taylor, 38 of Scio, Oregon, who is believed to have died while helping evacuate residents threatened by the Railroad South Fire.

"Officer Taylor was going door to door alongside local emergency crews helping families get to safety. His last contact with dispatch came while he was helping a family evacuate their home. Evidence recovered from a structure where he was working to help a resident escape indicates that he died during the evacuation effort. Formal identification remains pending with the medical examiner.

Everything we know about David's actions reflects extraordinary courage, selflessness and devotion to duty."

⚠️FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS continue for parts of central and southern Utah today as monsoon moisture brings another round of storms to the region.

Goblin Valley State Park is reminding visitors to stay out of canyons when rain is in the forecast, even if the chance appears low.

The San Rafael Swell, including Goblin Valley, has faced repeated flash flood threats this week. Storms miles away can send water rushing through normally dry washes and narrow canyons with little warning.

HERO ALERT: For FDNY members, the commitment to helping others extends beyond the firehouse.

While returning home from a morning run, FDNY Lieutenant James McConville of Ladder 151 in Queens noticed thick, black smoke coming from a private dwelling. With no FDNY units yet on scene, Lieutenant McConville entered the smoke-filled home wearing only a T-shirt and shorts after hearing signs that someone was still inside.

Approximately 20 feet into the home, Lieutenant McConville located a semi-conscious man and removed him as fire conditions continued to intensify. Once outside, he found the man without a pulse and immediately began CPR. After performing chest compressions and rescue breaths, the man began breathing on his own.

Lieutenant McConville then returned inside to complete a primary search of the home and continued his efforts to contain the fire until conditions became too dangerous.

“I do this for people I don’t know. Why wouldn’t I do this for my neighbor?” said Lieutenant McConville.
