A Milwaukee man with a prior fatal driving conviction has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after another crash left a 4-year-old girl dead and her mother seriously injured.

Donald Crayton pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide and two hit-and-run counts after striking his live-in girlfriend and her daughter, Zekani Hymes-Wilson, as they crossed the street to get pizza.

Crayton had never been issued a driver’s license and had previously served time after a separate fatal crash.

The judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison, followed by 15 years of extended supervision, and ordered him never to drive again.

NEW: Lane County Oregon deputy injured in Glenwood while making an arrest.

Deputies responding to a reported menacing call in Springfield on July 31 found a suspect had already broken into a separate location with people inside, then barricaded himself after climbing through a broken window, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

A little after 11 a.m., deputies were called to the 4200 block of Franklin Boulevard after callers reported a man entered a convenience store, assaulted an employee and then left the business. The suspect was later identified as 40-year-old Douglas Alvin Haley of Springfield. Authorities said Haley continued to threaten people in the area.

One deputy was injured while making entry but continued to engage Haley until he was detained. The sheriff’s office said the deputy required a tourniquet to stop a major bleed and suffered other injuries. The deputy was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment and was reported to be recovering in stable condition. A Mexican national convicted in connection with the crash that killed a 21-year-old U.S. Marine is now facing deportation for the third time.

Martin Martinez-Ballinas was first deported in 2020 after serving his sentence for the 2017 crash that killed Marine James Ray Walden III.

He was caught trying to illegally reenter the country in 2021, served 15 months in prison and was deported again in October 2022.

Federal authorities say he later returned to the United States yet again.

ICE took custody of Martinez-Ballinas on July 22 after he completed another federal prison sentence for illegal reentry.

Walden’s father is now speaking out, saying the case shows exactly why immigration enforcement matters.

BREAKING: An arson suspect in the Old Trails fire has been arrested.

Sheriff John Nowels, Spokane Valley Police Chief Ellis, and Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney Preston McCollam share updates on the Old Trails Fire.

The suspect is 37 year old Aaron F. Farinacci. A witness who saw Farinacci acting suspicious before the fire started helped in the investigation. Farinacci was reportedly apprehended with waterproof matches and a lighter on his person.

Aaron Forrest Farinacci, the arson suspect in the Spokane area fires, was originally charged with first degree murder in the 2010 killing of his father, but the case took a significant turn when that charge was dismissed following a grand jury indictment. By 2012, Farinacci pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault as charged.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office sadly announced the sudden and tragic passing of Communications Officer Elizabeth “Liz” Ortega. Liz was the victim of a murder–suicide at her residence in Port St. Lucie this past weekend. She began her Emergency Communications career with the Greenacres Police Department in November of 2001 and has been a dedicated member of PBSO Emergency Communications since the merger in February of 2016. She was a respected and cherished part of our PBSO family, known for her kindness, compassion, and a warm smile that could brighten any room.
