Deputy Heitman, just 38 years old, died in the line of duty after helping capture a dangerous wanted felon on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Deputy Heitman was part of a multi-agency task force that tracked down a violent suspect wanted on multiple felony warrants who had recently assaulted a law enforcement officer while escaping custody. When the suspect fled on foot, jumping a fence, crossing a creek, and running through an open field, Deputy Heitman and his loyal K-9 partner, Thanos, relentlessly pursued and successfully apprehended him, bringing the dangerous chase to a safe end.

Less than an hour after the arrest, tragedy struck.While back at the Creek County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Heitman suffered a sudden medical emergency. Fellow deputies, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers, EMS personnel, and firefighters fought desperately to save his life before he was rushed to the hospital. Despite their extraordinary efforts, Deputy Heitman passed away.

Before joining the Creek County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Heitman proudly served four years in the United States Marine Corps and two years with the Kiefer Police Department, dedicating his life to protecting others.

Deputies say James Shepard was already on felony probation and was arrested after driving with a suspended license while heading to a court-ordered drug class.

He now faces additional charges, including probation violation, drug test fraud, and evidence tampering.
