Californians were fed up with retail theft and passed Prop 36 in all 58 counties with nearly 70% voter approval.
Instead of fully funding and implementing what voters demanded, state legislators drafted AB 2108 and created yet another diversion program: this time for retail theft offenders.
Like mental health diversion, it offers another way to avoid jail time. Offenders even walk away without a conviction on their record. Even more surprising is that some of Californiaโs largest retailers, along with the California Retailers Association, support the bill despite reporting billions of dollars in losses due to retail theft.
Voters wanted meaningful consequences for retail theft offenders, but the state legislature moved in the opposite direction.

"This meeting could not have come at a better time. On Sunday, we reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish... ending the current conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and preventing Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon."
POTUS: What Obama did was loaded up a plane with $1.7B in cash from banks all over Washington, Maryland, and Virginia, and they gave it out to Iran, tried to bribe people, and they got a deal that was a road to a nuclear weapon.
POTUS: "It's a Memorandum of Understanding. If it doesn't get done in 60 days, that's alright โ we go back to bombing. I don't want to do that because it's so good, but we might have to because we're never going to let them have a nuclear weapon."
POTUS: "Technical discussions on the removal of all stockpiles of enriched materials will begin immediately... and unlike Barack Hussein Obama, who sent Iran pallets of cash, any relief they receive under this deal, they'll have to get based on meritโand it won't be from us."
POTUS: "Every administration, for decades, has sought to get Iran to relinquish its nuclear ambitions, but the threat only got bigger... What I'm doingโand what I didโshould've been done years ago... but it wasn't."
POTUS: "No President in history has ever been tougher on Iran than I have โ and they know that. If they don't honor the agreement... we'll probably go back to bombing them until they honor it."
POTUS: "As I expressed to the world leaders here this week, it's my hope that the peace agreement will be the beginning of a much larger deal all across the Middle East. We're very close."
POTUS: "We found a great deal of unity here at the G7, and we signed a declaration on illegal immigrationโthe first time ever for a G7... We signed other agreements to step up and to really coordinate and spend a a lot of time coordinating the stopping of drug trafficking."
POTUS: "Were not putting up money. Only if they're doing things right. If they're doing things right, if people want to invest, they can invest... remember this also, when you talk about 'billions of dollars,' they've had much more than a trillion dollars worth of damage done."
POTUS: "We have taken a lot of their money, and we have their money... and we froze it. At a certain point in time, I guess we're going to have to give it back. If we didn't give it back, nobody would ever invest in the dollar again."
POTUS: "If I go another 3 or 4 weeks, those same people that are critical [of the deal] would say, 'he went too long!' ... They had 159 ships. When we knocked out the last ship, the Times refused to do a story on it... We need a fair press, and thatโs why theyโre all doing so badlyโbecause they lost credibility."
POTUS on Iran abiding by the terms of the agreement: "When I say permanently, it should be permanentlyโ but if it's not permanently, we will bomb them."

BREAKING: A private jet reportedly crashed near Loop 20 in Laredo, Texas tonight, triggering a major emergency response. Witness video shows the aircraft on fire as first responders rushed to the scene. There have been no confirmation on victims dead or aliveโฆ

UPDATE: A small jet carrying six people crashed on a highway in South Texas Tuesday evening, with bystanders jumping in to assist emergency services in rescuing passengers from the fiery wreckage.
One person was killed and five others were injured after the plane crashed on Laredoโs Loop 20 highway, shutting down traffic in both directions and strewing debris across multiple lanes.
Video shared by a witness from the scene showed emergency responders attempting to crack open the planeโs windshield as authorities and bystanders assisted several people out of the burning aircraft. Some were seen walking away after escaping the aircraft.
The plane, a NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude business jet, had departed San Josรฉ del Cabo, Mexico, at around 6:18 p.m. local time and was bound for Austin, Texas, before diverting toward Laredo, along the US-Mexico border, according to flight data from FlightRadar24.
Authorities responded to the scene shortly before 10 p.m. local time after receiving a call from the local airport tower after the plane reported mechanical issues, Laredo Police Public Information Officer Jose Baeza told reporters from the scene. The plane lost contact with air traffic controllers before it crashed the highway, hitting a moving vehicle on its descent, he said.
FlightRadar24 data shows a steady, controlled descent into Laredo International Airport, until the signal cut out at around 600 feet, roughly two and a half miles short of the runway, at about 9:58 p.m. local time.
Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez also told KGNS the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure before crashing.
Police did not reveal the identities of the six on board or the condition of those injured. The victims have been transported to a local hospital.
โRegrettably and tragically there is one deceased involved in this crash,โ Baeza told reporters from the scene, without giving further details as the victimโs family is being notified.
Itโs unknown if anyone in the vehicle struck by the plane was injured. Five officers responding to the crash site were also transported to a local hospital for treatment related to injuries sustained during the rescue operation, according to Loredo Police Public Information Officer Jose Espinoza.
Federal agencies, including the National Transportation Security Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, have been notified and officers with the Federal Bureau of Investigation are already on-site, Baeza said.
