CHAFFEE COUNTY DEPUTY DONNIE SMITH RECEIVES INAUGURAL HOMETOWN HERO AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL BRAVERY
Deputy Donnie Smith of the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office has been recognized for his extraordinary courage and dedication to public service after receiving the inaugural Hometown Hero Award. The award was presented by U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly for the District of Colorado and Chaffee County Sheriff Andy Rohrich as part of the Freedom250 celebration.
The Hometown Hero Award was created to honor individuals whose actions demonstrate outstanding commitment to protecting and serving their communities. Deputy Smith was selected because of several remarkable incidents in which he put his own safety at risk to help others in life-threatening situations.
One of the most notable examples occurred in November 2022 on Mount Yale. A woman had fallen approximately 500 feet on an icy slope and suffered serious injuries. Due to the dangerous terrain and weather conditions, immediate evacuation was not possible. Deputy Smith stayed with the injured woman throughout the night in extremely harsh conditions, providing care and support until rescue teams could safely airlift her to medical treatment. Officials say his actions not only saved her life but also helped prevent severe frostbite and additional injuries.
In another rescue mission in October 2024, Deputy Smith responded to an emergency involving an injured hiker on La Plata Peak. At an elevation of more than 13,000 feet, temperatures dropped to dangerous levels overnight. Despite the difficult conditions, Smith remained with the injured individual throughout the night, ensuring the person's safety and well-being until rescue crews arrived the following day.
Deputy Smith's dedication extends beyond mountain rescue operations. In 2025, he responded to a dangerous active shooter incident, where he confronted the threat while helping deploy tear gas as part of law enforcement efforts to bring the situation under control. His actions demonstrated courage under pressure and a commitment to protecting lives during a critical emergency.
In addition to his field work, Smith has played a leadership role within his department. He helped develop tactical medical training programs designed to better prepare fellow deputies for emergency situations. These training efforts have strengthened the department's ability to respond effectively to high-risk incidents and medical emergencies.
During the award presentation, U.S. Attorney McNeilly praised Smith's dedication and selflessness. He noted that Deputy Smith consistently steps forward when faced with difficult and dangerous situations, embodying the highest standards of public service.
The recognition highlights the important role first responders play in protecting communities every day. Through his bravery, leadership, and commitment to helping others, Deputy Donnie Smith has earned the respect of his colleagues and the gratitude of the people he serves.
The Hometown Hero Award serves as a lasting tribute to his exceptional service and the positive impact he continues to make throughout Chaffee County and beyond.π
