A Rocky Mount NC police officer was killed Wednesday evening in an ATV accident.

Officer Michael Cotton was off-duty at the time of the crash, according to the department.

Cotton, a Rocky Mount police officer for the last seven years, had been a K9 officer since 2023.
His first K9, Forrest, has retired and is now a member of Cotton's immediate family.
Cotton, who graduated from Nash Community College with a degree in criminal justice technology, would have turned 30 later this month, the department said, writing, "Officer Cotton was more than a colleague; he was family. Our hearts go out to his loved ones. We are grateful for the condolences from our community."

Rest Easy Brother. Prayers for his family of blue and blood.πŸ™πŸ½

We’ve just learned that a Toronto Police officer has been shot during the execution of a search warrant and has sustained life threatening injuries. Our thoughts are with the injured officer, their family, and all Toronto Police Service members during this difficult time.πŸ™πŸ½

The city of Toronto, Canada, is reeling today after the murder of 43 year old Toronto Police Constable Marc Pinizzotto, shot in the line of duty.

Police Chief Myron Demkiw, speaking through tears, said that Const. Marc Pinizzotto and members of the Emergency Task Force were executing a search warrant connected to several shootings that have occurred in the Toronto area over the last 3 months, including the shooting at the U.S. Consulate in March, when he was shot.

Speaking at a news conference outside Sunnybrook hospital, Demkiw confirmed the news with β€œdeep and profound sorrow” and said he informed the officer’s family of his passing.

β€œWords cannot describe the pain they are feeling…no words can capture the impact on Marc’s family, who expected him to come home today," he said.

The U.S. Ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, commented on the shooting, saying that the prayers of all Americans are with Pinizzotto’s family.

β€œI think it just exemplifies an example of the close cooperation that we have in law enforcement between the two countries,” he said, referring to the consulate shooting investigation and the search warrant Toronto police were carrying out.

After a series of shootings at Toronto area synagogues, Jewish schools and businesses earlier this year, Toronto Police Service had established a new Counter-Terrorism Security Unit to strengthen its ability to detect, prevent and respond to emerging threats as well as task force to enhance police visibility.

Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, an Iraqi national, was arrested and charged in the United States last month with terrorism offences in connection with the consulate shooting.

Demkiw said the search is on for one suspect, 19-year-old Zara Jabbi. Jabbi, remains at large and is considered "armed and dangerous", Toronto Police Chief Myron Demikw said. β€œI would ask anyone that would see him to call 9-1-1 immediately.”

Constable Marc Pinizzotto, a dedicated 18-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service and a proud member of the Emergency Task Force, was shot and killed in the line of duty early Thursday morning. He was just 43 years old.

Rest In Peace, HeroπŸ’™πŸ–€

A former CIA agent is accused of fabricating major parts of his resume, including academic credentials and Navy Test Pilot claims.

Reports cited in the article say federal agents found approximately $40 million in agency gold during a raid, while the current charges relate to allegedly falsified timesheets.

The case raises serious questions about credential verification, internal safeguards, and security vetting inside sensitive federal agencies.

CHAFFEE COUNTY DEPUTY DONNIE SMITH RECEIVES INAUGURAL HOMETOWN HERO AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL BRAVERY

Deputy Donnie Smith of the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office has been recognized for his extraordinary courage and dedication to public service after receiving the inaugural Hometown Hero Award. The award was presented by U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly for the District of Colorado and Chaffee County Sheriff Andy Rohrich as part of the Freedom250 celebration.

The Hometown Hero Award was created to honor individuals whose actions demonstrate outstanding commitment to protecting and serving their communities. Deputy Smith was selected because of several remarkable incidents in which he put his own safety at risk to help others in life-threatening situations.

One of the most notable examples occurred in November 2022 on Mount Yale. A woman had fallen approximately 500 feet on an icy slope and suffered serious injuries. Due to the dangerous terrain and weather conditions, immediate evacuation was not possible. Deputy Smith stayed with the injured woman throughout the night in extremely harsh conditions, providing care and support until rescue teams could safely airlift her to medical treatment. Officials say his actions not only saved her life but also helped prevent severe frostbite and additional injuries.

In another rescue mission in October 2024, Deputy Smith responded to an emergency involving an injured hiker on La Plata Peak. At an elevation of more than 13,000 feet, temperatures dropped to dangerous levels overnight. Despite the difficult conditions, Smith remained with the injured individual throughout the night, ensuring the person's safety and well-being until rescue crews arrived the following day.

Deputy Smith's dedication extends beyond mountain rescue operations. In 2025, he responded to a dangerous active shooter incident, where he confronted the threat while helping deploy tear gas as part of law enforcement efforts to bring the situation under control. His actions demonstrated courage under pressure and a commitment to protecting lives during a critical emergency.

In addition to his field work, Smith has played a leadership role within his department. He helped develop tactical medical training programs designed to better prepare fellow deputies for emergency situations. These training efforts have strengthened the department's ability to respond effectively to high-risk incidents and medical emergencies.

During the award presentation, U.S. Attorney McNeilly praised Smith's dedication and selflessness. He noted that Deputy Smith consistently steps forward when faced with difficult and dangerous situations, embodying the highest standards of public service.

The recognition highlights the important role first responders play in protecting communities every day. Through his bravery, leadership, and commitment to helping others, Deputy Donnie Smith has earned the respect of his colleagues and the gratitude of the people he serves.

The Hometown Hero Award serves as a lasting tribute to his exceptional service and the positive impact he continues to make throughout Chaffee County and beyond.πŸ’™
