We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and coworkers of the Carroll County Deputy who was tragically killed in a senseless act of violence last night. We also hope for the complete recovery of the second deputy who was shot in this incident.🙏🏻

BREAKING OVERNIGHT: A deputy was fatally shot, and another was injured during a welfare check in Carroll County, Virginia on Friday night. Authorities say the suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

The law enforcement community is mourning the loss of Officer Kristen Yeager of the Central Berks Regional Police Department, who died in the line of duty while responding to a call for service on May 29, 2026.

Department officials described Officer Yeager as a dedicated public servant who served her community with courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.

In a statement, Central Berks Police said Officer Yeager answered the call to serve each day, placing the safety of the public above her own and leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Her death has sent shockwaves throughout Pennsylvania’s law enforcement community as fellow officers, first responders, family members, and residents mourn her loss.

Officer Yeager's service and sacrifice will be remembered by those who knew her, worked alongside her, and the community she swore to protect.

I was told that the horrible things occurring at the 1st campus was “my truth” in the most dismissive way by an official.  My 30 years of experience meant nothing. I  never felt more disrespected. We met with the directors.  They gave us a tour and pretended to be open to a functional relationship with us.  Then when the doors opened they didn’t want us around, and crime skyrocketed in the area just as we predicted. This campus should be closed and used solely for shelter and safe sleep space, run by one of the three major missions. To any city in America, if you hear talk of this being implemented in your area, fight it with every fiber of your being.
