It was a pleasure serving on todayβs panel at the League of California Cities alongside Sheriff Chad Bianco, Chief Larry Gonzales, Chief Rudy Lopez, and Lt. William Hutchison.
We had an important discussion about the funding needed to support Prop 36, the critical role technology plays in solving crimes, and the importance of community-led policing.
These are issues we are all passionate about, and I appreciated the opportunity to share our perspectives and work together on solutions that help keep our communities safe.

NEW: Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan is using facial recognition to ban lawyers from his venues if they file lawsuits against the Garden β a practice confirmed by a letter revoking a New York attorney's tickets after he sued on behalf of an injured police officer. The Garden's facial recognition database includes photos of NYPD officers, and its surveillance system has reportedly operated beyond the arena's walls without police authorisation. New York's attorney general says her office is reviewing the surveillance tactics. This is a story about a private venue using biometric surveillance to punish legal opponents and monitor public servants. ποΈ

Not every rescue starts with lights and sirens. Sometimes it starts with a couple graveyard officers trying to get coffee before ending their shift.
On Sunday Morning, Officers were inside Brewjee grabbing their morning coffee when they heard faint calls for help coming from somewhere nearby. The sounds were difficult to pinpoint, and employees mentioned they had heard something similar earlier before it suddenly stopped.
Most people probably would have chalked it up to the building making noise. These officers did not. The officers continued checking the area, including the nearby Maya Cinemas offices. While outside, they realized the yelling seemed to be coming from inside the wall between Brewjee and the theater. Officers knocked on the wall and to their surprise they got a knock back.Thatβs when they discovered, Isaac Valencia trapped inside the wall.
Salinas Fire responded and initially cut into Brewjeeβs wall, only to find another layer of cinderblock and cement behind it. Firefighters ultimately had to cut open a large section of the adjoining wall along Main Street to free Valencia, who estimated he had been stuck there for nearly 10 hours.
After being medically evaluated, Valencia was booked into Monterey County Jail for burglary.
Weβre glad this ended with everyone safely going home. Great work by our graveyard Officers, even when tired, for trusting their instincts, staying persistent, and quite literally listening to the walls.
