Answering the call to serve runs in the family for these DPS employees in Lubbock.

For nearly two decades, Texas Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Mickley and his wife, Christina Mickley, an Assistant Manager in the Driver License Division, have served their fellow Texans at DPS. Now, their son, Dylan, is carrying on their legacy as a State Trooper.

KCBD11 met with the Mickleys to learn how a career became a family tradition rooted in sacrifice, commitment and a shared heart for helping others.

We celebrate our folks on early mornings for more than just dealing with things – or people – that go bump in the night. They’re the deputies and professional staff who stand guard while you sleep. Many deputies get the unique experience of watching both the moon and the sun rise within the same shift.

Many thanks to our staff who are on watch while the rest of the world has closed its doors and the streets are quiet, save for the buzz of the street lamps and neon signs, the yowl of the occasional feral tomcat, and the sound of a siren in the distance.

EXCLUSIVE: Sheriff slams Walz, Ellison for freeing convicted murderer: ‘They didn’t care about the truth’

Aitkin County Sheriff Dan Guida spoke with Liz Collin on her podcast about the case of Brian Pippitt—who was convicted of killing an 84-year-old store owner—and how he believes the questionable decision-making of Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison and his Conviction Review Unit has put confidence in the Minnesota criminal justice system on the line.

“The sheriffs across the state of Minnesota stand strong together. We're going to fight evil. But when the politics get in front of good versus bad, bad things happen," said Sheriff Guida. 

Ellison and Walz, who make up two-thirds of the Minnesota Board of Pardons, voted to commute Pippitt’s sentence despite substantial opposition from Sheriff Guida, another member of the pardon board, and many others.
