The state didn't force Austin or other cities into a contract. The cities signed a contract to get money from the state. After they got the money, the cities refused to comply with the contract terms. Those terms include a requirement that the cities repay the state all the money they got if they don't comply with the contract.
Enforcement of the contract doesn't defund police. I signed a law preventing defunding the police. Under that law the cities still have to fully fund their police--they just have to find other funds in their budgets to pay for it.
If the cities didn't like the contract terms, they should have never entered into it.
By the way, the contract is just one page, with clear requirements and consequences for failing to comply.
As to local control, entering into the contract was a local decision. Breaching the contract is a local decision.

๐จ Exposing California's corrupt "Stop Nick Shirley Act", instead of going after the fraudsters California is now going after the people exposing the fraud.

The Dutchess County Sheriffโs Office sadly announced the death of New York State Department of Corrections officer Justin Brown.
Officer Brown tragically lost his life on April 13, 2026, following a motorcycle accident while on his way to work, answering the same call he carried out each day with dedication and professionalism.
He served with quiet strength, integrity, and unwavering commitment. To those who worked alongside him, he was more than an officer, he was a trusted partner and a steady reliable presence inside the walls.
Beyond the uniform, he was a devoted husband and father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. His love and dedication to them were evident in all that he did.
Rest Easy Brother. Prayers for his family of blue and blood.๐๐ป

We are heartbroken to share the tragic loss of another member of our High Point Police Department, NC family. Drake Shinabarger, a 28-year-old police recruit, died unexpectedly over the weekend. He was set to graduate from Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) in June.
Shinabarger was passionate about serving others. He joined the police department last summer after serving a few years with the High Point Fire Department. He also served in the National Guard, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve.
While his time with our department was brief, his impact was lasting. He was a leader among his recruit class, a friend to our future officers, a strong advocate for our department's wellness program, and someone you could always count on for a smile or laugh.
Rest Easy Brother. Prayers for his family of blue and blood.๐๐ป

Ignoring Venice residentsโ pleas for help, Councilmember Nithya Raman voted to prevent a dangerous encampment from being taken down. She also ignored the work that Councilmember Park did, in partnership with residents, to ensure that all camp occupants were offered shelter and services. Raman makes it clear that the safety of our schools, our parks, and our neighborhoods comes second to her political agenda.
