FACT: A drone flying at 35mph is not surveillance. It's responding.
New Orleans: Yesterday, the City Council passed an ordinance to allow the French Quarter to use drones as first responders (DFR). Many topics were conflated but, make no mistake, this is the future of policing.
The New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation proudly supports the implementation of the DFR program and has advocated for the use of drones (UAVβs) since their introduction in 2024. We will continue to be an active participant in this initiative as well as inform everyone that this accomplishes a difficult goal - it enhances public safety while increasing transparency.
There has been some confusion in recent discussions, with certain groups conflating drone technology with facial recognition and broad surveillance systems. Itβs important to be clear: these are not the same. The DFR program is focused on rapid response and situational awareness, not invasive monitoring.
In fact, the New Orleans Police Department has responsibly operated drones for the past 2 years in targeted situations such as traffic accidents and active perimeters involving violent suspects. This program builds on that proven track record, using technology to respond faster, assess situations more safely, and allocate resources more effectively.
As our neighbors in Jefferson Parish have learned, one officer, equipped with the right tools, can safely do the work of many by improving response times and outcomes for residents and visitors alike.
Importantly, this program increases transparency. A new digital dashboard will allow the public to access DFR flight logs in real time. Currently, this information is recorded on paper and is only available through formal public records requests. This shift represents a major step toward openness and accountability.
NOPJF is proud to have secured favorable funding from the vendor for this initiative, and we are already planning for expansion across the city. NOPJF believes in smart, responsible innovation that keeps New Orleans safe while building trust with the community.
